Abstract
Manusia sebagai bagian dari masyarakat sosial tidak bisa hidup tanpa mempunyai hubungan yang berkaitan antar sesama manusia lainnya. Sebagai bagian dari masyarakat, manusia menggunakan bahasa sebagai alat untuk berkomunikasi setiap saat dalam hidupnya. Peran Kesantunan di sini sangat berarti dalam komunikasi. Kesantunan mengajarkan orang bagaimana cara berperilaku yang sopan dan santun ketika kita berbicara dengan siapapun untuk menghindari konflik yang mungkin bisa terjadi. Ilmu yang berkaitan dengan kesantunan adalah FTA, yaitu ilmu yang mempelajari tentang ancaman yang dilakukan terhadap muka positif dan negatif dari para lawan bicara kita. Penerapan ilmu kesantunan akan menghaluskan tekanan terhadap ancaman yang diberikan kepada lawan bicara kita. Penulis menyusun sebuah studi tentang FTA dan ilmu kesantunan yang dilakukan oleh Carl Fredericksen dalam sebuah film yang berjudul UP. Ada dua rumusan masalah yang diajukan oleh penulis; (1) FTA apa saja yang dilakukan oleh Carl dalam percakapan yang terjadi di film UP; (2) tipe kesantunan apa saja yang diterapkan oleh Carl dalam percakapan di film UP. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk mendeskripsikan fenomena yang dipelajari dengan jelas dan sistematis. Studi deskripsi secara tekstual digunakan karena studi ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis naskah film ‘UP’. Teori yang digunakan oleh penulis adalah teori kesantunan dari Brown dan Levinson. Studi ini mengungkap bahwa semua jenis muka, baik positif maupun negative, ditekan. Strategi kesantunan juga diterapkan dalam percakapan, keempat strategi kesantunan, yaitu strategi kesantunan langsung, strategi kesantunan positif, strategi kesantunan negatif, dan strategi tidak langsung, yang diterapkan oleh Carl. Penulis menyarankan bahwa mahasiswa di jurusan bahasa Inggris melakukan penelitian lebih dalam tentang kesantunan dan FTA. Penulis juga berharap bahwa penyusun studi berikutnya bisa menghubungkan kesantunan dengan ilmu yang lain seperti kesantunan maxim dan lain sebagainya.
English Abstract
Human beings as the part of the society cannot live without having a communication with each other. As the part of society, peopleuselanguage communication every single time they live. Politeness here gives very important contributionpart in communication. Politeness shows people how to keep the manner in conversation to avoid the conflict that may happen between both interlocutors. The related study with politeness is FTA (Face Threatening Act). It is astudy that learnsabout positive and negative facesfor being threatened. The application of politeness strategy will redress the FTA towards the addressee. The writer conductsa study about FTA and politeness strategy performed by the main character Carl Fredericksen in the movie entitled ‘UP’. There are two problems of the study proposed by the writer: (1) What Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) are performed by Carl in conversation occurring in the movie “UP”?(2) What types of politeness strategies are performed by Carl in conversation occurring in the movie “UP”?This study uses qualitative approach in relation to the use of clear and systematic description about the phenomena being studied. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze conversation of the main character through the script of UP movie.The theory used bythe writer is Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness strategies.This study reveals that all of the faces, both positive and negative faces, are being threatened. The politeness strategies are also applied in the conversation, all the four types of politeness strategies, namely bald on-record politeness strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record, were embodied by Carl.The writer suggests students of Study Program of English conduct the deeper study about politeness strategies and FTA. He also hopes that the next researchers will relate the politeness strategy with other fieldssuch as politeness maxim or something else.
