English Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of tomato and turmeric as a feed additive on external egg quality of Japanese quail. Materials used 125 laying hens of Japanese quail, aged 8 weeks with average egg mass of 7.11 ±0.673 (coefficient of variation 9.46%). The quails were randomly placed in cages (5 hens per cage). The method was experimental research by using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 5 treatments and 5 replications. The treatments were T0: basal feed (control); T1: basal feed + 0.25% turmeric powder + 0.25% tomato powder; T2: basal feed + 0.5% turmeric powder + 0.5% tomato powder; T3: basal feed + 0.75% turmeric powder +0.75% tomato powder; T4: basal feed + 1% turmeric powder + 1% tomato powder. Variables measured were egg weight, shape index, shell thickness and shell weight. The data was analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and if significant effect appears then continued by Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that there were insignificant different (P>0.05) on egg weight, shape index and shell thickness among the treatments T1, T2, T3 and T4 compared to the T0 (control). However, significant different (P<0.05) was found on shell weight of quail egg. Supplementation of tomato and turmeric on quail diet as feed additive had no effect on egg weight, shape index and shell thickness. However, it had significant effect on shell weight. Supplementation of tomato and turmeric powder at level 0.5% respectively gave the best result on egg shell weight. It is concluded that tomato and turmeric powder supplementation in the quail diet did not influence its external egg quality.
