Abstract

Pala merupakan salah satu tanaman rempah yang memiliki nilai ekonomis dan multiguna karena setiap bagian tanamannya dapat dimanfaatkan dalam berbagai industri. Sifat fisik dan sifat mekanik biji-bijian diperlukan dalam merancang suatu peralatan untuk penanganan, pemisahan, pengeringan, penyimpanan dan pengolahannya. Sangat penting untuk mengetahui karakteristik biji pala sebelum mendesain mesin pemecah biji pala. Sifat – sifat tersebut diantaranya dimensi, diameter rata-rata, sphericity, surface area, bulk density, true density, porositas, sudut luncur, dan gaya tekan. Sifat fisik dan sifat mekanik biji pala ditentukan sebagai fungsi kadar air pada 9%, 14%, 19%, 24% dan 29%. Panjang, lebar, dan tebal rata-rata pada kondisi kadar air 9% adalah 22.48 mm, 18.07 mm, dan 16.17 mm berturut-turut. Pada rentang kadar air 9% - 29%, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan peningkatan secara linear pada ketiga dimensi aksial, diameter rata-rata, sphericity, surface area, dan bulk density. Sphericity dari 0.81 hingga 0.82, surface area dari 1040.43 mm2 hingga 1125.67 mm2. True density mengalami penurunan seiring dengan peningkatan kadar airnya mulai dari 0.8409 gr/cm3 hingga 0.6653 gr/cm3. Porositas mengalami penurunan pada seiring dengan peningkatan kadar air pada bahan dari 39.41 – 20.42%. Coefficient of friction mengalami peningkatan pada setiap kenaikan kadar airnya. Pada sifat mekanik, dimana nilai gaya tekan biji pala pada Intersep tebal yaitu 180.89 N, sedangkan intersep panjang dengan 130.18 N dan lebar dengan 156.80 N.

English Abstract

Nutmeg is a herb plant that has high economic value and most of its parts can be utilized in various industry. The physical properties and mechanical properties of seed are required in designing an apparatus for handling, separation, drying, storage, and processing. It is very important to know the characteristics of nutmeg seed before designing nutmeg-deshelling machine. The physical properties and mechanical properties consist of dimesion, mean diameter, sphericity, surface area, true density, bulk density, coefficient of friction and compressive force. The physical properties and mechanical properties of nutmeg seeds were determined as a function of moisture content in 9%, 14%, 19%, 24%, and 29%. The average length, width and thickness at a moisture content condition of 9 % were 22.48 mm, 18.07 mm, and 16.17 mm, respectively. In the range of moisture content 9 – 29%, the results of this study showed an increase linearly of the third axial dimension, sphericity, surface area, and bulk density. Sphericity from 0.81 to 0.82, surface area from 1040.43 mm2 to 1125.67 mm2. True density decresed with increase of moisture content from 0.8409 gr/cm3 to 0.6653 gr/cm3. Porosity decresed with increase of moisture content 39.41 – 20.42%. Coefficient of friction increased with increase of moisture content. Mechanical properties, the biggest value of compressive force at thickness were 180.89 N, length with 130.18 N and witdh with 156.80 N
