Abstract
Penggunaan strategi uncertainty reduction biasanya dilakukan secara face to face oleh dua individu yang belum saling mengenal. Namun strategi uncertainty reduction juga bisa dilakukan secara online atau dalam computer-mediated communication. Penelitian ini berfokus pada salah satu situs hospitality exchange, yaitu Couchsurfing.com dan objek penelitian ini adalah traveler atau biasa disebut surfer. Jika dilihat, surfer lebih mengalami ketidakpastian daripada host karena terdapat beberapa tindak kriminal yang dilakukan oleh host kepada surfer yang menumpang di rumahnya. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengetahui dan menganalisis strategi uncertainty reduction melalui computer-mediated communication yang cenderung digunakan oleh surfer dalam memilih host pada situs ini. Strategi-strategi yang ada pada teori uncertainty reduction dalam computer-mediated communication, yaitu strategi pasif, strategi aktif, strategi interaktif, dan strategi ekstraktif. Penelitian ini menggunakan satu variabel yaitu strategi uncertainty reduction (X). Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah kuantitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan kuesioner online. Sampel yang diambil menggunakan quota sampling sejumlah 100 responden dari berbagai negara. Hasil dari penelitian ini secara umum menunjukkan bahwa strategi uncertainty reduction yang cenderung digunakan jika diurutkan adalah strategi pasif, strategi interaktif, strategi ekstraktif, dan strategi aktif. Hasil penelitian berdasarkan identitas responden (Seperti jenis kelamin, usia, kewarganegaraan, dan keaktifan menjadi surfer) menunjukkan bahwa strategi uncertainty reduction yang cenderung digunakan ternyata sama dengan hasil penelitian secara umum yang mana tidak memiliki kecenderung yang berbeda.
English Abstract
The use of uncertainty reduction strategy has been usually done face to face by two individuals who have not known each other. But the uncertainty reduction strategy can also be done online or in computer-mediated communication. This research focused on one of the sites hospitality exchange, namely Couchsurfing.com and the object of this research was traveler or commonly called surfer. If viewed from the past, the surfer was more uncertain than the host because there were some criminal acts committed by the host to the surfer who stayed at his house. The purpose of this research was to know and analyze uncertainty reduction strategy through computer-mediated communication which tend to be used by surfer in choosing host on this site. Strategies that exist in the uncertainty reduction theory in computer-mediated communication, namely passive strategy, active strategy, interactive strategy, and extractive strategy. This research used one variable that is uncertainty reduction strategy (X). The research method used is quantitative descriptive with data collection techniques using an online questionnaire. Samples taken using a quota sampling of 100 respondents from various countries. The results of this research generally indicated that uncertainty reduction strategies that tend to be used if sorted are passive strategies, interactive strategies, extractive strategies, and active strategies. The result of the research based on the respondent identities (Such as sex, age, nationality, and liveliness to be surfer) shows that the uncertainty reduction strategies that tend to be used was the same with the general research result which did not have different tendency.
