Abstract

Studi ini berfokus pada persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan kartu flash dalam mengajar kosakata karena peneliti menemukan bahwa salah satu guru bahasa Inggris di SMKN 3 Malang masih menggunakan flashcard sebagai media dalam mengajar kosa kata. Selama studi pendahuluan, para siswa menunjukkan minat dan motivasi tinggi. Oleh karena itu, peneliti mencoba mencari tahu apakah siswa tertarik pada pelajaran atau tidak selama kosakata pengajaran dengan menggunakan flashcard. Flashcard yang digunakan oleh guru diselidiki juga dengan menggunakan teori dari Edwards (2006). Peneliti juga menjelaskan jenis-jenis kartu flash yang digunakan oleh guru dengan menggunakan teori dari Scott (1990) dan tahapan yang telah dilakukan oleh guru berdasarkan teori dari Cross (1991). Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Peserta penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sepuluh SMKN 3 Malang terutama di kelas X-Aph 2 di jurusan akomodasi hotel. Ada 26 siswa yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan observasi, kuesioner, dan wawancara. Pengamatan yang digunakan untuk mengetahui kartu flash dan jenis-jenis kartu flash yang digunakan oleh guru juga tahapan dalam mengajar kosakata yang telah dilakukan oleh guru. Pengamatan dianalisis menggunakan teori dari Miles dan Huberman (1994). Kuesioner digunakan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan kartu flash dalam mengajar kosakata. Kuesioner diadaptasi dari Notebaert (2009). Wawancara yang digunakan untuk memeriksa hasil persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan kartu flash dalam mengajar kosakata dari kuesioner dan jawaban guru dari wawancara. Setelah menganalisis data, peneliti menemukan bahwa guru telah melakukan tiga tahap dan dia menggunakan ketiga jenis flashcard dalam pengamatan pertama. Guru telah melakukan hanya dua tahap dan dia hanya menggunakan dua jenis kartu flash dalam pengamatan kedua. Berdasarkan temuan kuesioner siswa, 85% siswa lebih menarik, 82% siswa memiliki motivasi tinggi, 87% siswa lebih mudah untuk memahami kosakata baru ketika flashcard digunakan sebagai media dalam mengajar kosakata. Selama wawancara, guru juga mengatakan bahwa siswa dapat lebih fokus, lebih tertarik pada pelajaran dan mereka termotivasi untuk mempelajari kosakata jika guru menyiapkan beberapa kartu flash untuk mereka. Sebagai kesimpulan, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa memiliki persepsi yang baik tentang penggunaan kartu flash dalam mengajar kosakata. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian, direkomendasikan untuk guru bahasa Inggris untuk menggunakan flashcard karena media dalam mengajar kosakata juga penelitian ini dapat sebagai referensi untuk peneliti masa depan yang akan melakukan penelitian tentang mengajar kosakata atau flashcard.

English Abstract

The study focused on students’ perception on the use of flashcard in teaching vocabulary because the researcher found that one of English teacher in SMKN 3 Malang still used flashcard as the media in teaching vocabulary. During preliminary study, the students showed their interest and high motivation. Therefore, the researcher tried to find out whether the students were interested in the lesson or not during teaching vocabulary by using flashcard. Flashcard used by the teacher was investigated as well by using theory from Edwards (2006). The researcher also explained the types of flashcard used by the teacher by using theory from Scott (1990) and the stages that had done by the teacher based on theory from Cross (1991). This study used descriptive qualitative research. Participant of this study was the tenth grade students of SMKN 3 Malang especially in class X-APH 2 in majoring hotel accommodation. There are 26 students who participated in this study. For collecting the data, the researcher used observation, questionnaire and interview. Observation used to know the flashcard and the types of flashcard used by the teacher also the stages in teaching vocabulary that had been done by the teacher. Observation was analyzed using theory from Miles and Huberman (1994). Questionnaire used to know the students’ perception on the use flashcard in teaching vocabulary. Questionnaire was adapted from Notebaert (2009). Interview used to crosscheck the result of students’ perception on the use of flashcard in teaching vocabulary from questionnaire and the teacher’s answer from interview. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that the teacher had done the three stages and she used all of three types of flashcard in the first observation. The teacher had done just two stages and she just used two types of flashcard in the second observation. Based on the finding of students’ questionnaire, 85% of the students were more interesting, 82% of the students had high motivation, 87% of the students are easier to understand new vocabularies when flashcard was used as the media in teaching vocabulary. During interview, the teacher also said that the students could be more focus, more interested in the lesson and they were motivated to study vocabularies if the teacher prepared some flashcards for them. In conclusion, the researcher concluded that most of the students had good perception on the use of flashcard in teaching vocabulary. Based on the finding of the research, it is recommended for English teacher to use flashcard as the media in teaching vocabulary also this study can be as reference for the future researchers who are going to conduct a research about teaching vocabulary or flashcard.
