Abstract

Ada banyak faktor yang berpengaruh dalam belajar bahasa, salah satunya yaitu gaya belajar. Gaya belajar merupakan sesuatu yang alamiah dari seseorang yang kemudian menjadi suatu kebiasaan yang lebih disukai dalam menyerap, memproses, dan menguasai informasi baru dan ketrampilan yang berlangsung tanpa menghiraukan metode pengajaran atau wilayah. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menganalisa gaya belajar Bahasa Inggris yang digunakan oleh siswa kelas 11 IPA dan IPS SMAN 1 Kauman Tulungagug dan mencari apakah ada perbedaan yang penting dalam gaya belajar Bahasa Inggris diantara dua program tersebut. Penelitian ini disusun dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Data untuk penelitian ini diperoleh dengan menggunakan kuisioner yaitu, Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire yang didesain oleh Reid (1984). Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 1 dan XI IPS 1. Penelitian ini menemukan gaya belajar major yang ditunjukkan oleh siswa IPA dari yang paling banyak memilih hingga yang paling sedikit setelah grup yaitu, kinestetik, auditori, visual, taktile, dan individual. Sebaliknya, gaya belajar major yang ditunjukkan oleh siswa IPS setelah kinestetik yaitu, auditori, grup, taktile, visual, dan individual. Jadi, siswa IPA cenderung mampu belajar dengan baik ketika mereka belajar dalam kelompok sementara siswa IPS mampu belajar dengan baik melalui pengalaman Gaya belajar major antara siswa IPA dan IPS berbeda karena latar belakang pelajaran mereka juga berbeda. Gaya belajar sangat penting dalam proses belajar sehingga para siswa seharusnya sadar tentang gaya belajar mereka agar mampu belajar dengan cara yang tepat dan guru juga diharapkan menyadari gaya belajar siswanya untuk menentukan cara yang tepat untuk mengajar. vii

English Abstract

There are many factors affecting language learning, one of them is learning style. Learning style refers to an individual’s natural, habitual, and preferred ways of absorbing, processing, and retaining new information and skill which persist, regardless of teaching methods or content area. This study is aimed at analyzing the learning styles performed by science and social programs students of 11th graders of SMAN 1 Kauman Tulungagung and finding out the significant differences of English learning styles between the two programs. This study applied quantitative approach. The data of the study were collected by using questionnaire named Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ) designed by Reid (1984). The samples of this study are XI IPA1 and XI IPS 1. This study shows that the major learning style preferences performed by science students from the highest until the lowest are group, kinesthetic, auditory, visual, tactile, and individual learning style. Group learning style is the major learning style preference of the most science program students. It means that most of students of science program can learn English best when they learn in a group. On the other hand, the learning styles performed by social program from the highest until the lowest are kinesthetic, auditory, group, tactile, visual, and individual learning styles. Kinesthetic learning style is the major learning style preference of the most social program students. It means that most of social program students can learn English well when they learn by experience. In addition, there is a significant difference between science and social programs in applying English learning styles. The major learning style preference of science and social programs students are different because their background of study is also different. Learning style is very important in learning process, so the students must realize their learning styles to determine their appropriate ways in learning English. The teachers should also realize the students’ learning styles to determine the appropriate ways to teach the students in classroom.
