Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan nilai pencapaian membaca siswa melalui Small Group Discussion di SDN Kotalama 5 Malang. Selama tahap persiapan penelitian, siswa menunjukkan bahwa mereka mempunyai kesulitan dalam kegiatan membaca mereka, khususnya dalam mencari maksud dan struktur paragraf dalam sebuah teks. Oleh karena itu, peneliti mencoba untuk mengatasi masalah siswa dengan menggunakan teknik small group discussion dalam pengajaran membaca yang diadaptasi dari Brewer (1997).Penelitian ini menggunakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK), melalui dua siklus, terdiri 3 pertemuan disetiap siklus untuk meningkatkan prestasi pada pemahaman membaca siswa di dalam teks deskripsi. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas lima di SDN Kotalama 5 Malang, yang terdiri dari 20 siswa. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan catatan lapang, dan tes. Catatan lapang digunakan untuk menulis hal-hal yang terjadi selama proses belajar mengajar. Tes digunakan untuk mengukur peningkatan prestasi siswa terhadap teknik small group discussion yang digunakan untuk mengetahui nilai pemahaman membaca siswa.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pencapaian pemahaman membaca siswa meningkat secara signifikan. Dari 40% siswa lulus standar skor pada pre-tes meningkat menjadi 65% siswa lulus standar skor di siklus pertama dan 100% siswa lulus standar skor dalam siklus kedua. Berdasarkan hasil dari penelitian ini, teknik small group discussion adalah sebuah solusi yang direkomendasikan untuk mengajar pemahaman membaca siswa dan penelitian ini juga dapat digunakan sebagai referensi untuk peneliti yang akan melakukan penelitian yang sama.

English Abstract

This research aims to increase the value of reading comprehension of students through Small Group Discussion in SDN Kotalama 5 Malang. During the preliminary study, the students are indicated that they had difficulty in their reading comprehension activity, especially in finding the meaning and generic structure of descriptive text. Therefore, the researcher tried to solve the students’ problem by conducting small group discussion technique in the teaching reading, adapted from Brewer (1997).This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in 2 cycles, each cycle consists of three meetings to increase the achievement of the student's reading comprehension on descriptive text. The subject of this research was the fifth grader at SDN Kotalama 5 Malang. There were 20 students who participated in this research. In collecting the data, the researcher used field note and tests. The field notes were used to write things that occured during the process of teaching and learning. The tests used to know about the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension achievement in reading test.The results showed that the achievement of the student's reading comprehension increases significantly, from 40% students passed students standard score in Pre-test raised into 65% students passed students standard score in the 1st cycle and 100% students passed students standard score in the 2nd cycle. Based on the results of this research, the small group discussion technique is a recommended solution for teaching reading comprehension of students and this research can also be used as a reference for researchers who will be doing the same research.
