Abstract

Speaking adalah salah satu dari empat ketrampilan yang penting dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris dan dianggap sebagai ketrampilan yang paling sulit untuk dikuasai. Di lapangan, ada dua masalah yang menjadi penghalang utama dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris khususnya di SMKN 1 Jombang. Masalah itu adalah rendahnya motivasi para siswa dan pengurangan alokasi waktu mengajar Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK). Dua masalah itu ada di jurusan pemasaran. Melihat masalah tersebut, Project-based learning dianggap sebagai strategi yang paling tepat untuk mengatasi dua masalah tersebut dalam satu waktu. Selain itu, strategi project-based learning berdampak pula pada peningkatan speaking siswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan speaking siswa menggunakan project-based learning dan berfokus pada satu masalah penelitian yaitu bagaimana project-based learning dapat meningkatkan speaking siswa dari jurusan pemasaran di SMKN 1 Jombang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah collaborative classroom action research dikarenakan penulis belum punya kelas reguler. Metode penelitian ini terdiri dari empat tahap dalam satu siklus yaitu planning, acting, observing, dan reflecting. Lalu, apabila tidak mencapai kriteria keberhasilan yang telah ditetapkan maka harus dilanjutkan ke siklus selanjutnya. Kriteria keberhasilan dari penelitian ini adalah saat 75% siswa mendapatkan minimal 10 poin peningkatan. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 34 siswa dari kelas X PM 2. Data-data dikumpulkan menggunakan lima instrument yaitu Test, Questionnaire, Observational Checklist, Field Note, and Interview Guide. Penelitian dilaksanakan mulai dari 4 November 2016 sampai 13 April 2017. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa project-based learning dapat meningkatkan speaking siswa. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan 85,3% siswa mendapatkan minimal 10 poin peningkatan speaking dalam satu siklus. Project-based learning dapat pula mengatasi rendahnya motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Project-based learning juga dapat mengatasi masalah tentang terbatasnya alokasi waktu mengajar dengan beberapa modifikasi. Melihat hal itu, sangat disarankan untuk menggunakan project-based learning untuk mengatasi masalah guru dan siswa dalam pembelajaran yang berfokus pada kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris.

English Abstract

Speaking is one of four important skills in learning English. It is considered as the most difficult skill to be mastered. On the field, there are two problems found as a major barricade in learning English especially at SMKN 1 Jombang. The problems are students’ low-motivation in learning English and diminution of time allotment in teaching English for senior vocational school. Those problems exist in marketing department students. Reflecting those problems, Project-based learning is considered as the most suitable strategy because it can terminate those problems in a row. Moreover, project-based learning strategy can also impact to student’s improvement in speaking. This study aims to improve student’s speaking ability by using project-based learning. This study also focuses on one research problem which is how project-based learning can improve student’s speaking ability at marketing department, SMKN 1 Jombang. This study used collaborative classroom action research as research design since the writer still do not have a regular class. This research design consist of four stages in a cycle, as follows planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Thus, it must continue to have next cycles if it did not reach the criterion of success. The criterion of success of this study is when 75% of students achieve minimum 10 point of improvement. The subject of this study were 34 students of X PM 2. The data was gathered by using five instruments: Test (pre-test and post-test, Questionnaire (pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire) Observational Checklist, Field Note, and Interview Guide. The study was conducted starting from 4th November 2016 until 13th April 2017. This study found that project-based learning can improve students’ speaking ability. It is shown by 85,3% (29 students) of students reached minimum 10 point of speaking improvement in one cycle implementation. Then, project-based learning can also terminate students’ low-motivation in learning English. Thus, project based learning can solve the problem about limited time allocation in teaching English however it needed some modification in the project evaluation process. Based on that findings, it is suggested that project-based learning can be a useful strategy to overcome teacher’s and student’s problem in teaching speaking.
