Abstract
Berbicara merupakan salah satu kemampuan yang paling penting dalam Bahasa Inggris. Bagaimanapun juga, beberapa siswa memiliki masalah dalam mempelajari kemampuan berbicara. Menurut Ur (1996), ada beberapa masalah dalam berbicara seperti menahan diri, tidak ada yang bisa dibicarakan, partisipasi yang tidak merata dan penggunaan bahasa Ibu. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menjabarkan beberapa strategi mengajar dalam mengatasi masalah siswa dalam berbicara di mata kuliah berbicara. Studi ini memiliki dua rumusan masalah; (1) strategi mengajar dosen untuk mengatasi masalah mahasiswa dalam mata kuliah berbicara (2) pertimbangan dosen dalam menerapkan strategi mengajar pada kemampuan berbicara. Studi ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah seorang dosen dan 31 mahasiswa di kelas E guided speaking, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Brawijaya. Subjek penelitian ini ditentukan berdasarkan hasil studi pendahuluan yang menggunakan pedoman wawancara dan observasi kelas. Studi ini menggunakan Instrumen penelitian yang dikembangkan oleh penulis dengan menggunakan teori dari Ur (1996) dan Kayi (2006). Instrumen tersebut merupakan pedoman wawancara dosen, pedoman wawancara mahasiswa, tabel observasi dan dokumentasi. Data yang telah terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan triangulasi dan dijabarkan secara naratif. Penemuan studi ini yaitu; (1) dosen menerapkan beberapa strategi mengajar seperti memberikan koreksi, menciptakan suasana nyaman di dalam kelas, memberikan intrinsic motivation, dan menggunakan teknik mengajar seperti roleplay dan group discussion. Di samping itu, ada beberapa strategi pendukung yang digunakan oleh dosen yaitu menggunakan teknik presentasi, observasi, dan mendongeng (2) pertimbangan dosen dalam menerapkan strategi mengajar tidak lain berdasarkan kondisi psikologis mahasiswa. Disarankan untuk dosen Bahasa Inggris lainnya agar dapat menerapkan strategi tersebut di dalam mata kuliah berbicara. Untuk peneliti selanjutnya disarankan agar dapat menjabarkan masalah yang di hadapi siswa dalam berbicara beserta faktor yang mempengaruhi timbulnya masalah tersebut dan dapat menjabarkan secara jelas.
English Abstract
Speaking is considered as one of the most important skills in English. However, most of the students have problems in learning speaking. According to Ur (1996), there are some problems such as inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and the use of mother tongue. This study is aimed at describing the teaching strategy to overcome students’ speaking problems in the speaking class. This study has two research problems; (1) the lecturer’s teaching strategies to overcome students’ problems in speaking (2) the lecturer’s consideration in implementing the strategy in teaching speaking This study used descriptive qualitative as a research design. The subjects of this study were one lecturer and 31 students in E class of guided speaking of English Language Education Program at Universitas Brawijaya. The research subjects were chosen from the results of preliminary study by using interview guide and observation as instruments. The research instruments were developed by the researcher by using theory from Ur (1996) and Kayi (2006), namely interview guide for lecturer, interview guide for students, observation checklist and documentation. The data were analyzed by using triangulation and described narratively. The findings of this study were as follows; (1) the lecturer implemented some strategies such as give corrective feedback, provide relax situation in the classroom, use intrinsic motivation, and use technique such as roleplay and group discussion. There were some supporting techniques applied by the lecturer such as presentation, observation, and story telling (2) the consideration of implementing the strategies is based on the students’ psychological feeling. It is suggested that other lecturers can implement these strategies in teaching speaking. For further researchers, it is suggested that they should find out the factors affecting the students’ problems in learning speaking and describe them in details.
