Abstract
Penguasaan kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris merupakan prioritas bagi banyak pelajar asing. Berbicara bahasa asing di depan umum jauh lebih menantang. Peneliti melakukan studi pendahuluan dengan mewawancarai beberapa siswa tahun ajaran 2015 yang terkait dengan dosen pengajar yang paling disukai. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa ada satu dari tiga dosen yang mengajar berbicara yang dianggap memiliki strategi mengajar terbaik dalam mengajar berbicara. Dengan demikian, peneliti melakukan studi kasus terhadap dosen pilihan. Tujuan dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan strategi dosen dalam pengajaran berbicara dan respon siswa terhadap strategi dosen tersebut. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah studi kasus dimana data dikumpulkan, dianalisis, dan diuraikan secara deskriptif kualitatif. Peneliti memfokuskan pada satu individu, dosen pilihan, sebagai subjek penelitian. Peneliti menggunakan empat instrumen yaitu wawancara, observasi, kuesioner dan catatan lapangan. Peneliti menggunakan teori Brown (2007) untuk membuat instrumen. Studi ini membuktikan bahwa dari sepuluh strategi berbicara yang diajukan oleh Brown (2007), dosen menerapkan enam strategi. Empat strategi lainnya tidak diimplementasikan oleh dosen seperti apa yang Brown (2007) cantumkan dalam teorinya, namun dosen tersebut menggunakan strategi lain untuk menjalankan kelas. Selain itu, response siswa terhadap strategy yang di pakai dosen sangat baik. Dapat disimpulkan walaupun ada empat strategi yang tidak dilaksanakan oleh dosen, proses belajar mengajar masih berjalan dengan baik. Dosen bisa menerapkan semua teori dari Brown (2007) agar proses belajar mengajar menjadi lebih menarik.
English Abstract
The mastery of speaking skill in English is a priority for many foreign-language learners. Speaking foreign language in public is much more challenging. The researcher did a preliminary study about the lecturer who has the best teaching strategy by interviewing some students of 2015 academic year related to the most preferred speaking lecturers. The result showed that there is one out of three lecturers who teaches speaking that is considered to have the best teaching strategies in teaching speaking. Thus, the researcher conducted a case study toward the preferred lecturer. The objectives in this study are to describe the lecturer’s strategies in teaching speaking and the students’ response toward the strategies. The design of this research is a case study in which the data were collected, analyzed, and elaborated descriptive-qualitatively. The researcher focused on one individual, the preferred lecturer, as the research subject. The researcher used four instruments including interview guide, observation checklist, questionnaire and field notes. The researcher used Brown (2007) speaking theory for making the instruments. This study reveals that based on the ten speaking strategies proposed by Brown (2007), the lecturer implemented six strategies. The other four strategies were not implemented by the lecturer exactly as what Brown (2007) proposed in his theory, but the lecturer used other strategies to run the class. Moreover, the students’ response toward the strategies were also good. In short, even though there are four strategies that were not implemented by the lecturer, the teaching and learning process still runs well. The lecturer might implement all the theories from Brown (2007) in order to make the teaching and learning process more appealing.
