Abstract

Berbicara adalah salah satu keterampilan penting yang harus diperoleh siswa. Siswa sering kali mendapatkan kesuliatan ketika berbicara. Berdasarkan hasil dari interview guru Bahasa Inggris beserta siswa kelas VIII-I di SMP Negeri 10 Malang bahwa siswa memiliki masalah dalam hal berbicara, seperti; kurangnya kepercayaan diri dan kurangnya kosa kata; motivasi siswa dalam belajar Bahasa Inggris sangatlah rendah; serta guru masih menggunakan teknik mengajar tradisional seperti menghafal atau menerjemahkan. Dengan demikian, peneliti memutuskan untuk mengaplikasikan picture series dalam mengajar berbicara untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Metode penelitian yang digunakan pada studi ini adalah Penelitian Tindak Kelas (PTK). Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus yang terdiri dari 6 pertemuan. Peneliti menggunakan pedoman wawancara, ceklis observasi, field note, tes, dan angket sebagai instrumen penelitian. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa dari kelas VIII-I SMP Negeri 10 Malang. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa picture series dapat membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara. Penelitian ini dianggap berhasil apabila 70% dari siswa dapat mendapat nilai yang setara atau lebih dari KKM yaitu 75. Pada pre-test, hanya 23% atau 7 dari 30 siswa dapat mencapai KKM sedangkan pada post-test, 80% atau 24 dari 30 siswa dapat mencapai nilai lebih dari KKM. Disamping itu, penelitian ini juga dinyatakan berhasil jika keterlibatan siswa selama kegiatan berbicara lebih dari 70%. Berdasarkan ceklis observasi tentang partisipasi siswa untuk setiap pertemuan menunjukkan bahwa lebih dari 70% siswa aktif selama aktivitas berbicara. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa picture series sukses meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa dan juga keaktifan partisipasi siswa pada aktivitas berbicara.

English Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills which should be acquired by students. Students often get difficulty in speaking. As the result of interview with the English teacher and VIII-I students of SMPN 10 in preliminary study, the students get difficulties in speaking, namely their lack of confidence and vocabulary; the students‘ motivation in learning English is quite low; and the teacher still uses traditional teaching technique in teaching speaking such as memorization or translation. Thus, the researcher decided to apply sequence of picture series in teaching speaking to improve the students‘ speaking skill. The research method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted in one cycle which consisted of six meetings. As the instruments, the researcher used interview guide, observation checklist, field note, test, and questionnaire. The subjects of this study were 30 students of VIII-I class at SMP N 10 Malang. The result of this research showed that picture series can help the students in increasing their speaking skill. This study was considered successful when 70% of the students could gain the score, equal or more than 75 as the minimum passing grade (KKM). In the pre-test, it was found that only 23% or 7 of 30 students passed the grade, whereas in the post-test, 80% of the students or 24 out of 30 students obtained the score higher than KKM. Besides, this study also was considered successful when the students‘ involvement during the speaking activities is greater than 70%. From the observation checklist of the students‘ involvement for each meeting, the result showed that more than 70% of the students were active during speaking activity. Thus, it can be concluded that picture series successfully improved the students‘ speaking skill and the students‘ active participation in speaking activity.
