Abstract

Baru-baru ini kita melihat banyak korporasi dan figur berkuasa dari kelas borjuis yang memasarkan diri mereka sebagai progresif meskipun masih memperbolehkan terjadinya eksploitasi di bawah kekuasaan mereka. Di media fiksi, kita melihat fenomena yang serupa melalui karakter yang menunjukkan perilaku yang sama. Studi ini akan mendiskusikan penggambaran peran Shiv Roy sebagai seorang agen kapitalisme di dunia korporat. Data diambil dari season pertama, kedua, dan ketiga dari serial TV Succession karya Jesse Armstrong. Dengan memegang teori Marxisme untuk memeriksa subjek, studi ini meneliti koneksi antara karakter Shiv Roy dengan kapitalisme. Studi ini menemukan bahwa acara ini menggambarkan peran Shiv di dalam struktur kapitalis melalui tindakan-tindakannya, yang melibatkan: perilakunya terhadap kelas pekerja, penekanan kuasa korporat, dan dipertahankannya nilai-nilai kekeluargaan untuk melindungi kapital. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari tema dan karakterisasi yang ditampilkan di acara. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa Shiv mempertahankan status quo dan melanggengkan bentuk masyarakat yang kapitalis.

English Abstract

Recently we see many corporations and ruling figures of the bourgeoisie class who market themselves as progressive and empowering while still enabling further exploitation to happen under their control. In fictional media, we see this through characters who exhibit the same set of behaviors. This study will discuss the depiction of Shiv Roy’s role as an agent of capitalism in the corporate world. The data was collected from the first, second, and third season of the Succession TV series, created by Jesse Armstrong. By drawing upon theories on Marxism to examine the subject, this study seeks to analyze the connections between Shiv Roy’s character with capitalism as a part of the bourgeoisie class. This study finds that Succession’s depiction of Shiv’s role within the capitalist structure is reflected through her actions that involve: her attitudes toward the working class, assertion of corporate power, and the upholding of family values to protect capital. This can be seen through the theme and characterization consisted in the show. This study concludes that Shiv preserves the status quo and perpetuates a capitalist society.
