Abstract
English Abstract
The New Order regime in Indonesia was characterized by authoritarian rule, censorship, and suppression of dissent. The abuse of power issues by the authorities of that era is shown in the film adaptation of the novel entitled Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash, directed by Edwin in 2021. Apart from the authority issues, there are several social problems in the film that still can be discovered in the current reform era. In analyzing this film, the researcher wants to examine how Edwin represents social and authority issues during the New Order era in his film adaptation and discloses the relevance of criticisms towards social and authority issues within Edwin's film adaptation in the current reform era. This analysis uses the adaptation theory by Linda Hutcheon (2013) and other supporting theories, accompanied by social criticism theories from various experts in showing social problems which are the criticism object in the film adaptation. The results of the analysis show that there are several scenes adjusted by Edwin due to several considerations in representing the conditions of authority and social issues in the film. From the results of the analysis, it is also discovered that there is still relevance of authority and social issues during the New Order era with the current Indonesian Reformation era.
