Abstract

English Abstract

There is a big speculation over differences in motivation especially in education field regarding their self-efficacy of EPS (English Public Speaking). EFL Pre-service teachers in Indonesia are prone to this belief as they are still technically a “teacher-in-training” and motivation plays an undeniably big role supporting their foundation to their development of English fundamental skills in order to make them fully equipped with necessary knowledge and experience throughout their teaching process in a classroom. Furthermore, prior researchers have stated that gender is one of the concluding factors in determining pre-service teachers’ selfefficacy of their EPS. To examine the differences of self-efficacy and its relation to genders, the present study investigated Indonesian EFL pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their self-efficacy in EPS. This study took sample of 6 pre-service teachers (3 male & 3 female) from Universitas Brawijaya who have previously been in the mandatory teacher training program, each pre-service teachers have been selected and classified based on their representation in being pre-service teacher who have taught in the secondary level to senior secondary schools (SMP, SMK, & SMA). A qualitative method using IDI (In-depth Individual) interview was employed to better investigate the response from the subjective view-point of the participants. The instrument used to collect the response was in form of interview questions which delves into three dimensions, namely; teachers’ self-efficacy of EPS in performance; teachers’ strategies of self-efficacy in EPS; and factors’ influencing pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy in EPS, which was adopted from Paradewari (2017). The findings suggest that there were varying responses of self-efficacy, strategies employed, and influencing factors from each level of educations. Additionally, response from male and female pre-service teachers in the same level are uniquely different from each other and could represent an already-existing stereotyping of genders, thus, cohering to gender disparity theories.
