Abstract
Kelas speaking cenderung menjadi kelas yang dihindari oleh mahasiswa karena berbicara tampak ditakuti oleh mereka, terutama berbicara di depan umum. Padahal, ketika mahasiswa bertekad untuk menguasai speaking, terdapat sebuah teknik bernama self-talk yang sudah dikenal siswa dan mereka telah terbiasa menerapkan teknik ini dalam kegiatan akademik sehari-hari untuk melatih keterampilan berbicara itu sendiri. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi mahasiswa tentang penerapan teknik self-talk di kelas public speaking sebelumnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi kasus sebagai desain penelitian dengan melibatkan 4 partisipan dari mahasiswa semester empat Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Brawijaya. Data diperoleh dari wawancara dengan partisipan. Dokumentasi dikumpulkan untuk mendukung hasil wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa yang mempunyai persepsi positif dengan menerapkan self-talk positif sebelum kinerja mereka lebih berpotensi untuk menghasilkan performa yang sukses dan efektif, sehingga berdampak pada nilai akhir mereka. Self-talk yang positif mendorong mahasiswa untuk mengabaikan semua pernyataan negatif dalam pikiran mereka dan tetap fokus pada pernyataan positif yang nantinya memengaruhi tingkat kepercayaan diri dan menurunkan kecemasan mereka. Sayangnya, menurut analysis data, terdapat satu mahasiswa yang kesulitan untuk menerapkan self-talk positif seperti yang telah diharapkan peneliti. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menyarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk mengadakan penelitian yang sama untuk mengetahui lebih jauh tentang self-talk negatif yang dibentuk mahasiswa.
English Abstract
Speaking class tends to be the class that the undergraduate students attempt to elude because speaking seems intimidating for them, precisely speaking in public. In fact, when the students desire to master speaking, there is a technique named self-talk technique which the students are already familiar with and they get used to it in their daily basis academic activity to master the speaking skill itself. Hence, This study aimed to find out students’ perception on the application of self- talk technique in their previous public speaking classes. This study employed a case study as the research design by involving 4 participants from the fourth semester students of English Language Education Faculty of Cultural Studies Universitas Brawijaya. The data were obtained from interviewing the participants. Documentation collected to support the result interview. The result revealed that the students who have positive perception by applying positive self-talk before their performance are more likely to have successful and effective performance, consequently it impacts their result score. Positive self-talk encourages the students to ignore all the negative statements in their mind and stay focused on the positive ones which affect their level of confidence and lower down their anxiety. Unfortunately, according to data analysis, there was one student who struggled to apply the positive self-talk technique as the researcher expected. Hence, the researcher suggests to the next researcher to conduct the same research to find out more about the negative self- talk which the student shapes.
