Abstract
Berbicara adalah proses membangun dan berbagi makna melalui penggunaan simbol-simbol verbal dan non-verbal, yang disampaikan dalam berbagai konteks (Chaney dan Burke, 2015). Kosakata adalah salah satu komponen inti dari kemahiran bahasa yang dapat menentukan seberapa baik pelajar akan berbicara yang mengarahkan individu ke pencapaian yang lebih baik. Penelitian menguji hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata dan kompetensi berbicara siswa EFL. Sebanyak 32 siswa di SMP Negeri 2 Kota Blitar berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Peneliti menggunakan metode korelasional dan membagikan tes kepada 32 siswa kelas 8 di SMP Negeri 2 Kota Blitar. Instrumen penelitian adalah tes yang diadopsi dari Daryanti (2015) dan tes kemampuan berbicara siswa. Data dihitung menggunakan SPSS v.25, dan Pearson Product moment digunakan untuk mendapatkan hasil korelasi. Hasil penelitian mengungkapkan bahwa ada korelasi positif antara kedua variabel dengan koefisien korelasi (nilai r) 0,514, korelasi signifikan dengan nilai signifikansi (sig. 2 -tailed) .003 dan korelasi positif. Semakin tinggi kosakata siswa, semakin baik mereka mencapai berbicara
English Abstract
Speaking is the process of building and sharing meaning through the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, that conveyed in a variety of the context (Chaney and Burke, 2015). Vocabulary is the one of the core components of language proficiency that can determine how well learner will speak which leads individuals to good achievement. This study examines the relation between vocabulary mastery and speaking competence of EFL students. The researcher used a correlational method and distributed the tests to 32, 8th grader students in SMP Negeri 2 Kota Blitar. The instrument of the study was a test adopted from Daryanti (2015) and students' speaking test. The data was calculated using SPSS v.25, and Pearson Product moment was used to obtain the correlation results. The results of this study showed that there was a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and students' speaking competence with the coefficient correlation (r value) is 0.514, the correlation is significant with significance value (sig. 2-tailed) .003 and positive correlation. The higher the students' vocabulary, the better they achieve the speaking.
