Abstract

Berdasarkan analisis, hanya ada 3 prinsip UDL yaitu Simple and Intuitive, Perceptible Information, dan Tolerance for Error.

English Abstract

The discrepancy in the use of media in learning between teacher and students is found in SMP Brawijaya Smart School Malang. The teacher used multimedia which mostly has accessibility for all students especially for students with visual disabilities. Meanwhile, the students only used traditional media in paper-based and without any choice for writing tools in the classroom. As a result, it affects students with visual disabilities due to the inability not to access paper-based media with pen or pencil as the writing tools. This study presents an analysis of the accessibility of classroom instruction based on a visual disability student‘s perspective using Universal Design Learning principles. This study used a descriptive-qualitative approach which is focused on critical education to make an argument for accessibility classroom instruction in public school especially in Junior High School. The data collection taken by observation and record video of the teaching practice in English class at 9th grade. In addition, the data is analyzed in accessibility of classroom instruction using Universal Design Learning (UDL) based on Gargiulo and Metcalf (2021) that are Equitable used, Flexibility in used, Simple and Intuitive used, Perceptible Information, Tolerance for Error, Low Physical Effort, and Size and Space for Approach and Use. Based on the analysis, there are only 3 UDL principles that are Simple and Intuitive, Perceptible Information, and Tolerance for Error. Meanwhile, there are not found UDL principles in Equitable Used, Flexibility in Used, and Low Physical Effort in the teaching practice. However, the UDL principle in Size and Space for Approach and Use is not analyzed due to this study only focused on accessibility of classroom instruction. Thus, the researcher suggests that students with visual disabilities should do surveys by visiting the public school when they want to study in general education, then interview the teachers about the system education in that school to minimize inaccessible teaching and learning in the general classroom.
