Abstract

How Beautiful We Were karya Imbolo Mbue. Novel How Beautiful We Were menceritakan tentang sebuah perusahaan kapitalis mendominasi dan mengeksploitasi lingkungan sebuah desa hingga mengakibatkan degradasi lingkungan di desa tersebut.

English Abstract

This study analyzes the environmental exploitation caused by capitalism and its outcomes in the novel entitled How Beautiful We Were by Imbolo Mbue. The novel How Beautiful We Were tells about a capitalist company dominating and exploiting the environment of a village and causing environmental degradation in the village. Using the ecocriticism theory and Alfred Crosby’s ecological imperialism theory, this study examines the process, purpose, and outcomes of environmental exploitation by an American oil company named Pexton in the village of Kosawa. The result of this study shows that the start of Pexton’s dominance of Kosawa’s environment is marked by obtaining permission from the government to extract oil. In the process, Pexton is indifferent to citizens’ rights and solely cares about the benefits they can get. Pexton exploits the environment of Kosawa by building an oil factory, installing oil pipelines, and disposing of production waste around the village regardless of the impact they can cause. Pexton’s environmental exploitation aims for the continuity of oil production to continue obtaining personal benefits. The environmental exploitation activities have resulted in the loss of soil fertility, deterioration of air and water quality, and the scarcity of natural resources in the village of Kosawa. Pexton’s environmental exploitation also affects the health of the villagers and the sustainability of village life and culture.
