Fatmawati, Vika (2022) Preferensi Siswa di Setiap Tingkat Kecakapan Bahasa Terhadap Jenis Umpan Balik Korektif. Magister thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
English Abstract
Speaking is one of English skills that students need to master. Even so, in learning speaking, students often face difficulties that they create mistakes or error whether in terms of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, or other aspects. These errors require attention from the lecturer to prevent them from getting fossilized. In order to do so, the lecturer gives oral corrective feedback. Moreover, Lyster & Ranta (1997) mentioned six types of corrective feedback; explicit correction, recast, clarification request, metalinguistic feedback, elicitation, and repetition. However, students’ preferences on how the corrective feedback given is important because it affects the way they perceive it. In this study, the researcher aimed to discover students’ preferences of oral corrective feedback based on their proficiency level. The researcher used qualitative design, especially descriptive qualitative. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was adapted from Gamlo (2019) and Ananda, et al., (2017), while the interview guideline was adopted from Ünsal Şakiroğlu (2020). The result showed that most of the students preferred explicit correction, especially students from A2, B1, and B2 levels, while the second preferred type was elicitation. The majority of them also preferred given correction after they speak rather than at the end of the class. Moreover, most of them liked being corrected only on important aspect and they preferred correction on their pronunciation and vocabulary. Lastly, the students preferred lecturer as the one who provides them the correction. Even so, they were fine with friend’s correction and self correction.
