Abstract

English Abstract

Student engagement is one of the most critical aspects in learning, especially in universities that accommodate students in studying further education. Student engagement is a meta-construct including behavioral, emotional (affective), and cognitive engagement. The focus of this research is behavioral student engagement. The aim of the study is to determine the level of students’ behavioral engagement in Issues on Linguistics course, and to know the extent to which the critical review enhances students’ behavioral engagement in the course. This study uses qualitative approach but uses quantitative data. The data were gained from survey distributed to students at Study Program of English Literature, Brawijaya University who took Issues on Linguistics class. In analyzing data, the researcher used theory of behavioral student engagement from Fredricks, et al. (2004). The results show that the students have a high level of behavioral student engagement. In addition, the critical review is proved to be affective in improving the students’ behavioral engagement. The students mentioned some soft skills such as critical thinking skills, cognitive skills and problem- solving skills as the benefits that they gained by doing the critical review assignments in Issues on Linguistics class.
