Abstract

English Abstract

In this modern society, English has become a necessary part of communication. English takes many roles in our daily life for example education, health, economy, entertainment, politics, and all of the communication context. Speaking is one of the crucial skills in learning English as a foreign language. Thus, Students of the English Language Education Program in Universitas Brawijaya have to be mastered speaking skills well. Besides, the role of epistemological beliefs can affect students especially, in speaking achievement. However, students who participate in online language learning experienced a high level of language anxiety, most of the students are suffered from speaking anxiety (Russel, 2020). Considering those reasons, the researcher conducts a correlational study between students’ internet-specific epistemic beliefs and their anxiety in online EFL oral tasks. The study was used a quantitative approach with a correlation method. The participants of the research were 100 second-year students. There were two kinds of questionnaires as the research instrument. The first questionnaire was the Internet Specific Epistemic Beliefs questionnaire consist of 16 items adopted from Kammerer (2015). The second questionnaire, the Foreign Language Anxiety Scale questionnaire consists of 33 items adopted from Martin et al. (2017). Then, the data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS. The finding reveals that there’s a positive correlation between two variables which are students’ epistemic beliefs and their anxiety. It is shown that the correlation coefficient between the two variables is .582. The result of this study shows that it is categorized as medium correlation as the correlation examined significant at the 0.01 level, while the P values are .000 < 0.05. It can be assumed that students with sophisticated Epistemic Belief are more likely help them to lower their level of anxiety.
