Abstract

English Abstract

Fluency becomes a new problem that needs to be overcome in learning a language especially as a second language or foreign language. Students often get difficulty in speaking fluency, which can be called as disfluency. Disfluency can be caused by some problems such as difficult tasks and lack of practice. Retelling is an activity either in written or oral form to explain the main idea of a text to build students’ comprehension. In the preliminary study, students need literacy of people because they are retelling something that isn’t based on their experience. By that, the researcher wants to change the types of genre become Students’ Life Story because it doesn’t ask students to read/need literacy of people because they are experienced by themselves. So, the researcher hopes that the use of Students’ Life Story by retelling technique can really improve students’ speaking fluency. The research design used in this study was Pre-Experimental Research with a quantitative approach. This study was conducted in three meetings. As the instruments, the researcher used the test which was pre-test and post-test. The subjects of this study were 36 students of X Science 6 class at Senior High School 3 Lumajang. The result of this research showed that life-story-retelling technique can help the students in improving their speaking fluency. This study was considered successful when the percentage of students could gain the score, equal or more than 70 as the minimum passing grade (KKM) in the post-test is higher than students’ score in the pre-test. In the pre-test, it was found that only 6% or 2 of 36 students passed the grade, whereas in the post-test, 31% of the students or 11 out of 36 students obtained the score higher than KKM. Besides, this research was successful since the level of significance was lower than 0.05. In this research, the level of significance was 0.012, which means that the result reached the criteria of success. Thus, it can be concluded that life-story-retelling technique successfully improved the students’ speaking fluency.
