Abstract

English Abstract

Soursop leaf (Annona muricata L) is a part of the soursop plant which is known for its rich benefits. In Indonesia and other countries, soursop leaves are used as herbal medicine for the treatment of cancer, rheumatism, diabetes, hypertension, and diarrhea. This study aimed to examine the potential of soursop leaves as a source of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic based on a literature review. The study used a narrative literature review approach. The literature searching used databases: EBSCO, Science Direct, PubMed Central, and ProQuest. The results showed that soursop leaves have the potential as antioxidants by (1) inhibiting lipid peroxidation; (2) lowering ROS levels, and (3) anti-ulcer effect that inhibiting the ulceration process. Soursop leaves also have the potential as an anti-inflammatory by (1) increasing levels of IL-10 as an anti-inflammatory cytokine; (2) suppressing NO and PLA2 production; and (3) perform wound healing by increasing the expression of Hsp70 protein and collagen fibers. Soursop leaves also have the potential as antidiabetic by (1) inhibiting the activity of α-amylase and α-glucosidase; (2) lowering blood glucose levels; (3) increasing the activity of SOD and catalase; (4) enhancing anti-glycation activity; and (5) and lowering lipid profile (total cholesterol, LDL, TG, VLDL, HDL). It can be concluded that soursop leaves have the potential as a source of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic.
