Abstract

Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti memfokuskan pada hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata siswa dan kemampuan membaca mereka. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada hubungan antara penguasaan kosakata siswa dengan kemampuan membaca mereka pada semester kedua kelas delapan SMPN 4 Pare tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Peneliti menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif melalui penelitian korelasional. Peneliti menggunakan desain penelitian korelasional dengan melakukan tes kosakata dan membaca kepada siswa kelas dua SMPN 4 Pare sebagai sampel penelitian ini untuk mendapatkan data korelasi antara penguasaan kosakata siswa dengan kemampuan membaca mereka. Peneliti menggunakan tes yang terdiri dari 57 item sebagai instrumen penelitian ini. Sampel penelitian ini berjumlah 34 siswa kelas II SMPN 4 Pare. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan SPSS ver. 25.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosakata siswa dengan kemampuan membaca mereka. Berdasarkan analisis data yang dihitung dengan SPSS diperoleh nilai Sig (P Value) = 0,000 dan =0,05. Artinya Ha diterima dan Ho ditolak karena Sig (P Value) =0,000 < =0,05. Angka korelasi menunjukkan 0,869, artinya interpretasi korelasi sangat kuat. Artinya penguasaan kosakata penting untuk kemampuan membaca dan juga fakta menunjukkan bahwa skor kosakata dapat mendukung skor membaca.

English Abstract

In this research, the researcher focused on the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability. The purpose of the research was to know whether there was a correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their reading ability at the second semester of eight grade of SMPN 4 Pare in the academic year of 2020/2021. The researcher used quantitative approach through correlational research. The researcher used correlational research design by conducting test vocabulary and reading to the second year students of SMPN 4 Pare as the sample of this research in order to get the data of correlation betweenstudents’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability. The researcher used test that consists of 57 items as an instrument of this study. There were 34 students of the second year students of SMPN 4 Pare as the sample of this research. In analyzing the data, the researcher used SPSS ver. 25.0. The result of the study showed that there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading ability. Based on the data analysis computed by SPSS, it was obtained that Sig (P Value) = 0.000 and α=0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected because Sig (P Value) =0.000 < α=0.05. The correlation number show 0,869, it means the interpretation of the correlation is very strong. It is mean the vocabulary mastery is important for reading ability and also the fact shows vocabulary score can support reading score.
