English Abstract

To this day, there is still not enough representation of people with disability on media. Portrayals of people with disability on media so far have been impacting the minority group in a harmful way. With film having the power to generate discourses among societies, certain stigmas and stereotypes about people with disability had emerged which impacted their lives rather badly. This research aims to analyze the character Elisa from the film The Shape of Water, who has speech impairment that causes her inability to speak, using Roland Barthes’ semiotic model and find out how Elisa is being portrayed on screen as person with disability. The result of this analysis found that through her characterization, Elisa was portrayed as someone who was intelligent, cheerful, and defiant, among other things. The researcher gathered that although the filmmakers managed to overthrow some of the bad stereotypes about people with disability, some of them were still being enforced through this character, such as the varying degree of microaggressions she suffered almost every day, how selfish she could be, et cetera. The researcher then compares this representation of PWD to phenomena that happen in real life and how much it reflects the current situations in society
