Abstract
Di Indonesia, bahasa Inggris dianggap sebagai bahasa asing pertama. Namun, saat ini dalam kurikulum sekolah dasar terbaru, pemerintah tidak memasukkan bahasa Inggris sebagai mata pelajaran yang harus diajarkan. Di sisi lain, kebutuhan akan kemampuan komunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris semakin meningkat, terutama dalam berbicara. Karena itu ada banyak orang memilih untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka dengan mengambil kursus bahasa Inggris. Kampung Inggris Pare Kediri adalah salah satu tempat ikon di Jawa Timur di mana mereka dapat menemukan ratusan kursusan bahasa Inggris. Salah satunya Foreign Language Centre (FLC) yang selalu memiliki penutur asli bahasa Inggris untuk mengajar dan memiliki program khusus. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan tantangan dalam mengajar dan belajar berbicara di FLC. Penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara sebagai instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah tiga puluh delapan, terdiri dari tiga puluh tujuh siswa mulai dari siswa SMA dan mahasiswa dan dua tutor FLC. Temuan penelitian ini adalah (1) tantangan mengajar berbicara yang dihadapi oleh tutor gugup mengajar siswa yang seusia, harus menunjukkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik seperti, tidak memiliki kepercayaan diri yang besar ketika berbicara di depan kelas, tidak memiliki pengucapan yang baik dan tidak menguasai banyak kosa kata, para tutor harus mengajar dengan sabar kepada siswa dan memberi perhatian besar pada satu individu untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka; (2) tantangan belajar berbicara yang dihadapi oleh siswa adalah kepercayaan diri, kekhawatiran, kurangnya persiapan. Oleh karena itu lembaga ini harus menyediakan infrastruktur yang lebih baik sehingga proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran dapat lebih kreatif dan menarik untuk memotivasi siswa dalam belajar berbicara.
English Abstract
In Indonesia, English is considered as the first foreign language. However, currently in the current elementary school curriculum the government does not include English as a subject to be taught. On the other hand, the need of the ability of communication in English is escalating, especially in speaking. Therefore they can find, many people choose to improve their speaking ability by taking English course. Kampung Inggris Pare Kediri is one iconic place in East Java in which there are hundreds of English courses. One of them Foreign Language Center (FLC) which always has native English speakers to teach and has special programs. The objective of this study is to describe the challenges in teaching and learning speaking at FLC. This research is descriptive qualitative. it utilized questionnaire and interview as the instruments to collect the data. The participants of this research were thirty eight, consisting of thirty six students starting from senior high school students and university students and two tutors of FLC. The findings of this study are (1) the challenges of teaching speaking faced by tutors are ; nervousness teaching the students of the same age, lacking of confidence when teaching big class, lacking of knowledge and strategies in deviding attention to individual students in order to help them improving their speaking skills, the tutors should teach very patiently to students and give big attention one individual to improve their speaking ; (2) the challenges of learning speaking faced by students lack of are self confidence, worriness, lack of preparation. That is way this institution have to provide more support for the tutors by giving professional development program, so that the teaching and lerning process can be more effective and attractive in order to motivate students in learning speaking.
