Abstract
Berbicara adalah penggunaan bahasa yang aktif untuk menungkapkan makna sehingga dapat membuat pengertian kepada orang lain. Studi penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa-siswa di kelas X pemasaran mempunyai kesulitan dalam belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Menurut Ur (1996) ada beberapa faktor penyebab yang menghambat siswa dalam berbicara, diantaranya; inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother-tongue use. Dengan demikian, studi ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui penyebab dari kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa dalam belajar berbicara di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan, SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo. Penelitian ini merupakan studi kasus yang dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan disajikan secara deskriptif dalam bentuk kata. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah 39 siswa dari XPM di SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti telah mengembangkan dua instrumen yaitu wawancara dan kuesioner berdasarkan pada teori Ur (1996). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa menemui kesulitan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris dikarenakan empat faktor yaitu inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, dan mother-tongue use. Kesulitan-kesulitan ini termasuk dari takut membuat kesalahan, malu, minimnya kosakata, kurang pengetahuan tentang tatabahasa, kesempatan berbicara yang sedikit dalam kelompok diskusi, dan penggunaan Bahasa Indonesia untuk menjawab pertanyaan guru dan berbicara dengan teman sekelas. Faktor-faktor lain yang membuat siswa kesulitan untuk berbicara Bahasa Inggris yaitu kurangnya percaya diri dan lingkungan yang tidak mendukung. Peniliti menyarankan kepada guru Bahasa Inggris untuk meningkatkan kinerja dan memiliki strategi yang lain dalam mengajar berbicara. Selain itu, hasil kajian ini diharapkan akan bermanfaat bagi para peniliti berikutnya sebagai referensi dalam melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut tentang kesulitan-kesulitan siswa dalam belajar berbicara Bahasa Inggris.
English Abstract
Speaking is the active use of language to express meaning so that it can make sense to other people. The preliminary study of this research showed that students in XPM at SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo had some difficulties in learning speaking. Based on Ur (1996) there were many factors that cause obstacles in learner’s speaking they are; inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother-tongue use. Thus, this research is attempted to know the causes of the students’ difficulties in learning speaking at the Senior Vocational School, SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo. This research is a case study that was analyzed using qualitative approach and presented descriptively in form of words. The subject of this research was 39 students of XPM at SMK PGRI 1 Ponorogo. To collect the data, the researcher developed two instruments, they are interview guide and questionnaire based on Ur (1996) theory. The findings of this research showed that the students encountered the difficulties in speaking English due to some factors namely inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation, and mother tongue use. These difficulties were in the form of fear of making mistakes, shyness, lack of vocabulary, grammar knowledge use, little talking time in group discussion, and the use of Bahasa Indonesia to answer the teacher’s question and to talk with their classmates. Other factors that made the students have difficulties in speaking English were lack of confidence and less support of the environment. The researcher suggests the English teacher to improve the performance and have other strategies to teach speaking. In addition, the result of this study is expected to be useful for the next researchers as the reference in conducting further research about students’ difficulties in learning speaking.
