English Abstract

Semiotic is a study of sign. The sign can take form of everything involved in human life, it can be word, colour, images, sounds, object, body gestures, face expressions, etc. which referring something other than itself. In Brave movie (2012) directed by Mark Andrew and Brenda Chapman, there were a lot of signs supported the story, especially about the relationship of mother and daughter, Elinor and Merida. There were two problems of study in this research: (1) what are the signs that represent the relationship of Elinor and Merida; (2) how the signs represent their relationship in this movie. To solve the problems of the study, this research used semiotic theory of Peirce (Peircean model) which is called as triadic semiotic. It was consists of representamen, interpretant and object. To support the analysis, this study also used movie dialogue as the evidence. The result of this research found that there were seven signs represented the relationship of Elinor and Merida: (1) a tapestry of Dun Broch family which depicted close relationship of Elinor and Merida. But when it is broken, their relationship is also ruin; (2) Merida‟s bow and arrows which depicted Elinor‟s disagreement if princess has a weapon; (3) Elinor‟s necklace which depicted family, but Merida exchanged it with a spell to the witch. It also depicted that Merida lost her family; (4) Merida breaks her feminine dress by Elinor. When Elinor groomed Merida to be like her, Merida broke the dress to do archery. It is depicted that Merida did not want to follow Elinor‟s desire and she likes to be free; (5) a cake from the witch which is actually a spell to change Elinor into a bear. It is depicted the way Merida changed her fate by changed her mother; (6) needle and thread that depicted women stuff and Merida wants to uses that. When the tapestry is repaired, the relationship of them is also improved: and (7) a tapestry of Merida and bear that depicted their better relationship.
