Abstract

English Abstract

This study investigates the ways the Iraqi cultures are represented through the eyes of westerners in the movie American Sniper by Clint Eastwood. Interpretations of Iraq, as well as other Middle East cultures, often carry an implicit assumption that the West is superior whereas the East is inferior. This study uses Edward Said’s (1978) Orientalism as theoretical framework. “Orientalism” has been identified as the particular form that Western stereotypical understandings of Eastern cultures have taken. Intercultural communication becomes highly problematic as long as stereotypes are held and as long as the other culture is seen as foreign and wholly other. By transcending this “Orientalism” the reader will be in a better position to understand with those from another culture without having to set up a dichotomus boundary between us and them. In conducting the research, the writer analyzed one problem of the study which is: How are the representation of Iraq culture in the movie American Sniper by Clint Eastwood? The study finds that Iraq is represented as timelessness, exotic, degenerates, and constructs binary opposition. Based on an Orientalist perspective, those negative charateristics are considered as Orient stereotypes. Finally, the writer suggests the next researchers to analyze object from different perception using other approach; psychological approach, for example. And also the writer expects that the further research can conduct a research about orientalism in different objects beside American Sniper movie such as poems, short stories, and drama script.
