Abstract
Cerita pendek adalah media untuk menyampaikan pesan tentang perasaan dari penulis terhadap apa yang telah terjadi di lingkungan social. Cerita pendek memiliki elemen-elemen untuk mengungkapkan perasaan penulis dan salah satunya adalah karakter. Karakter sebagai tanda digunakan untuk merefleksikan keberadaan seseorang dengan tujuan untuk membangun imajinasi pembaca, terlebih pada teks narasi. Oleh penulis, beberapa karakter disajikan dalam bentuk pengkarakteristikkan secara langsung atau secara tidak langsung. Ernest Hemingway, seorang penulis terkenal mempersembahkan pengkarakteristikkan yang bersifat tidak langsung dalam karyanya. Melalui teks, pengkarakteristikkan bersifat implisit pada masing-masing karakter dalam cerpen karya Hemingway yang berjudul Hills Like White Elephants dapat diidentifikasi. Penelitian dari karya Hemingway yang berjudul Hills Like White Elephants menggunakan pendekatan strukturalis sebagai dasarnya; susunan teks dan teori dari Roman Jakobson: metafora, dan metonimi sebagai teori yang digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi pengkarakteristikkan di tiap-tiap karakter melalui teks dan dialog. Informasi tentang Hemingway dan beberapa referensi tentang pengkarakteristikkan dibutuhkan untuk melengkapi proses pengidentifikasian. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan keahlian dari Ernest Hemingway dalam bermain pengkarakteristikkan yang bersifat tidak langsung. Dalam cerita pendek yang berjudul Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway menunjukkan tiga karakter yang memiliki pengkarakteristikkan bersifat tidak langsung yaitu the American, the Girl dan the Woman. Setiap karakter memiliki ciri khas. Karakter pertama yaitu ‘the Girl’ digambarkan sebagai seorang yang selalu pesimis dengan kondisinya, keras kepala dan dia dapat dikategorikan sebagai seorang yang labil. Karakter kedua, yaitu ‘the American’ digambarkan sebagai seorang yang plin-plan, egois, dan tidak bertanggung jawab. Karakter yang terakhir, yaitu ‘the Woman’ yang digambarkan sebagai seorang yang sopan. Untuk peneliti berikutnya, disarankan untuk menggunakan pendekatan sejarah pada karya-karya Ernest Hemingway yang lain, karena sebagian besar karya Hemingway berdasarkan dari pengalaman pribadi selama dia hidup di Eropa sebagai relawan ketika Perang Dunia I terjadi.
English Abstract
Short story is a medium to deliver the message of the author’s sense about what happened in society. Short story has the elements to reveal the author’s sense and one of them is character. Character as a sign is used to reflect the existence of the person in order to build the reader’s imagination, especially in the narrative text. Some of characters are presented by the author in direct or indirect characterization. Ernest Hemingway is a well known author who presents indirect characterization in his work. The characterization of each implicit character can be identified through the text in Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants. The study of Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants applies structuralism approach as the grounding approach; generic form, and Roman Jakobson’s metaphor, and metonymy as the theories that are used to identify each character’s characterization through the texts and dialogues. Information about Hemingway and some references about characterization are needed to complete the process of identification. The result of this study presents Ernest Hemingway’s specialty in playing indirect characterization. In Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway presents three indirect characters’ characterization; the American, the Girl and the Woman. Each character has traits. First, the characterization of the Girl shows that she is a person who is always pessimistic with her condition, stubborn and she can be categorized as an emotionally unstable person. Second, the American’s characterization shows that he is fickle, egoist, and he is also an irresponsible person. The last, the Woman’s characterization describes that she is a polite person. For the further researchers, it is suggested to use historical approach in other Ernest Hemingway’s works because most of Hemingway’s works were from his experience during he spent his life in Europe by being the volunteer in World War I.
