Abstract
Subordinasi perempuan selalu ditemukan di masyarakat dengan sistem patriarki. Perempuan dianggap memiliki posisi kedua dengan batasan-batasan yang mengikat eksistensi mereka. Masyarakat dengan sistem patriarki menciptakan sistem dimana laki-laki mempunyai dominanasi lebih tinggi daripada perempuan. Sistem patriarki ini juga ada di masyarakat Jepang. Budaya Jepang dengan sistem ini, memiliki kecenderungan untuk mengeksploitasi posisi perempuan dan menempatkan perempuan sebagai komoditas. Hal ini tercermin pada bagaimana tokoh perempuan dalam film Memoirs Of Geisha diperlakukan sebagai komoditi ekonomi. Film ini adalah sebuah adaptasi dari novel yang berjudul sama karya Arthur Golden. Untuk menganalisis film ini, penulis menggunakan teori feminisme dengan fokus pada bagaimana perempuan diperlakukan sebagai komoditas ekonomi Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bagaimana tokoh perempuan dalam film Memoirs Of Geisha diperlakukan sebagai komoditas ekonomi dalam masyarakat mereka. Tokoh perempuan di film ini tidak hanya dijadikan seorang Geisha tetapi juga seorang pelacur. Geisha atau pelacur di sini menunjukkan bagaimana posisi perempuan yang tersubordinasi sebagai komoditas di Jepang. Mereka tidak memiliki pilihan untuk memperoleh kehidupan yang lebih baik. Beberapa tokoh, Sayuri dan Mameha misalnya, berjuang untuk mendapatkan seorang danna sebagai pelindung yang akan membiayai kebutuhan dengan cara menjual keperawanan dengan harga tertinggi. Hasil menjual keperawanan inilah yang akan menjadi tolok ukur keberhasilan, karena mereka percaya bahwa semakin tinggi harga keperawanan, akan semakin besar kesuksesan yang didapat. Harga ini dapat untuk membayar semua hutang selama proses pelatihan menjadi geisha. Tokoh lain, seperti Pumpkin dan Satsu ditakdirkan untuk menjadi pelacur yang bukan keinginan mereka. Hatsumomo, tokoh unik yang melanggar aturan Geisha untuk tidak boleh jatuh cinta, tetap diizinkan untuk menjadi geisha. Kesimpulannya, menjadi seorang pelacur yang dapat dibeli dengan uang dan geisha yang harus mendapatkan harga tertinggi untuk keperawanan adalah proses menjadi komoditas ekonomi dalam film Memoirs of Geshia. Masyarakat dengan sistem patriarki mendukung kondisi ini dan semakin membuat posisi perempuan tertindas.
English Abstract
Women subordination is always found in the society with patriarchy system. Women are considered as having second position with limitation and boundaries tied for their existences. Society with patriarchy system creates the system that men with their dominant power, are higher than women. Patriarchal system also exists in Japan. Japanese culture with its strict system inside, has tendency to exploit women position and posites them as the commodity. It is reflected on how women characters in Memoirs Of Geisha movie are treated as commodity of economy.This is a film adaptation of the novel of similar work by Arthur Golden, which is directed by Rob Marshall.To analyze this movie, the writer uses feminism theory which focuses on how women are trated as commodity of economy. The result of this study shows how women characters in Memoirs Of Geisha are treated as commodity of economy in their society. Women characters in this movie are not only being Geisha but also prostitutes which here show how women position is subordinated as commodity in Japan. They do not have a choice to get better life. Some characters, Sayuri and Mameha for instance, struggle to get their danna as their patron to support their financial aspects by selling their virginity to the highest price. This highest price will be the measurement for their success, because it is believed that the more money she gets, the more successful her life will be. This price also can pay all of her debt during the training process of becoming geisha. The other characters, such as Pumpkin and Satsu are destined to be prostitutes which is not their willingness to accept. The last is Hatsumomo, a unique character because of her allowable attitude after breaking the rules of Geisha. In conclusion, becoming a prostitute whose service can be bought by money and a geisha who should get the highest price for her virginity show the process of being commodity of economy in Memoirs of Geshia movie. Patriarchal society supports this condition and makes women position in Japanese society oppressed.
