Abstract
Tabu merupakan kata-kata yang dilarang karena tidak sesuai dengan agama dan norma-norma yang berlaku di masyarakat. Di banyak tempat, masih banyak orang menggunakan kata-kata tabu dalam percakapan sehari-hari dan berkomunikasi. Kata-kata tabu biasanya digunakan untuk mengekspresikan apa yang dirasakan orang. Pada saat ini, kata-kata tabu dengan mudah kita temukan disekitar kita, contohnya musik dan film dari Amerika. Banyak kata-kata tabu yang di ucapkan oleh aktor dan aktris di film tersebut. Studi ini meneliti tentang jenis kata-kata tabu, situasi dan tujuan penggunaan kata-kata tabu yang digunakan dalam film “The Departed”. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis, situasi dan penggunaan kata-kata tabu. Dalam melaksanakan studi ini, penulis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Penulis hanya menganalisa kata-kata tabu yang diucapkan oleh Bill Costigan dan Colin Sullivan.di film “The Departed”. Penulis menggunakan teori Wardhaugh (1986) untuk menganalisa jenis kata-kata tabu. Untuk mendiskripsikan situasi saat kata-kata tabu digunakan, penulis menggunakan teori faktor sosial oleh Holmes. Penulis juga menganalisa tujuan penggunaan kata-kata tabu yang sering diucapkan oleh Bill Costigan dan Colin Sulivan dengan mengunakan teori Wardhaugh. Setelah menganalisa, penulis menemukan 51 katakata tabu yang digunakan oelh Bill Costigan dan 33 kata-kata tabu oleh Colin Sullivan. Penulis menemukan bahwa penggunaan kata-kata tabu mempunyai banyak tujuan, Bill Costigan dan Colin Sulivan sering menggunakan kata-kata tabu untuk penekanan pernyataan. Penulis menyarankan kepada mahasiswa jurusan bahasa untuk meneliti kata-kata tabu dengan menggunakan teori yang lain. Penulis juga menyarankan pada peneliti-peneliti selanjutnya untuk mempelajari lebih dalam tentang katakata tabu dengan menganalisa lagu, percakapan sehari-hari atau novel.
English Abstract
Taboo is forbidden words because it is not suitable in religion and against the norms in society. In many places, there are still many people using taboo words in their daily conversation and communication. Taboo words are usually used to express what people feel. Recently, taboo words are easily found, for example in American songs and movies. There are some taboo words expressed by actors and actresses in the movies. This research investigates the types of taboo words, the circumstances and the purpose used in “The Departed” movie. The aim of this research is to find out the types, the circumstances and the purpose of taboo words. In conducting this research, the writer used qualitative approach. The writer only analyzed the taboo words used by Bill Costigan and Colin Sullivan in “The Departed” movie. The writer applied the theory from Wardhaugh (1986) to analyze the kinds of taboo words. To describe the circumstances when taboo words are used by Bill Costigan and Colin Sullivan, the writer used Holmes’ theory. The writer also analyzed the purpose of taboo words mostly uttered by Bill Costigan and Colin Sullivan using Wardhaugh’s theory (2006). After analyzing, the writer found 51 taboo words uttered by Bill Costigan and 33 taboo words by Colin Sullivan. The writer found out that the using of taboo words have many purposes, Bill Costigan and Colin Sullivan mostly uttered taboo words to emphasize statements. The writer suggests English Department students to conduct research in taboo words using other theories. She also suggests the next researchers to study more deeply about taboo words by analyzing songs, daily conversations or novels.
