Farman, AhmadSatya (2015) Grammatical and Lexical Cohesions in Joko Widodo’s English Translated Version of Inauguration Speech in 2014. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

English Abstract

This study is about Grammatical and Lexical Cohesions which are found in Joko Widodo’s English Translated Version of Inauguration Speech in 2014. There are two research problems in this study, namely: (1) What are grammatical cohesions found in Joko Widodo’s English translated version of inauguration speech, (2) What are lexical cohesions found in Joko Widodo’s English translated version of inauguration speech. The researcher used the theory of Halliday and Hasan, to analyze the grammatical and lexical cohesions contained in Joko Widodo’s English translated version of inauguration speech. This study used qualitative approach by using document analysis to analyze the data. The data source of this study is taken from the site of Embassy of Republic of Indonesia in Seoul, Republic of Korea (kbriseoul.kr/kbriseoul/index.php/en/2013-01-13-22-22-09/embassy-news/308-jokowi-inauguration-speech). In this study, the researcher found 209 grammatical and lexical cohesion devices which consist of 131 grammatical cohesion devices and 78 lexical cohesion devices. From the findings, there is no ellipsis, antonymy and metonymy used in the speech. The conclusion of this study shows that the cohesion devices have an important role in the speech because it can make the speech meaningful and cohesive, so the readers would be helped to understand what Joko Widodo wanted to convey through his speech. The researcher also learned that there are several examples of grammatical or lexical cohesion words but they do not function as a grammatical or lexical cohesion in the speech. For the next researcher, it is suggested that he/she analyze another object of the study such as article, movie script, etc with another grammatical and lexical cohesion theory.
