Abstract

Allium sativum atau umumnya dikenal sebagai bawang putih adalah tanaman umbi yang berasal dari famili Amarglidaceae. Dalam sejarah pengobatan tradisional dan pengobatan alternatif bawang putih telah digunakan untuk mengobati infeksi parasit, sakit perut, diare, diabetes serta gigitan ular. Bawang putih juga merupakan agen antibakteri. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membuktikan bahwa bawang putih memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap Corynebacterium diphtheriae, penyebab penyakit difteri yang terjadi pada saluran pernafasan. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Laboratorium Mikrobiologi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Brawijaya. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah difusi sumuran dengan konsentrasi ekstrak 0%, 50%, 60% 70%, 80%, 90% dan 100 %. Data yang diperoleh dari Kruskal wallis menginformasikan bahwa probabilitasnya <0,05, oleh karena itu dapat dinyatakan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam efek ekstrak bawang putih terhadap penghambatan pertumbuhan Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Uji korelasi spearman menunjukkan koefisien sebesar 0,870, menunjukkan ada hubungan yang kuat antara dua variabel. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa ekstrak bawang putih (Allium sativum) memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap pertumbuhan Corynebacerium diphtheriae secara in vitro.

English Abstract

Allium sativum or generally known as garlic is a bulbous plant that derive from the family Amarglidaceae family. In the history of traditional medicine and alternative treatment garlic had been used for treating parasite infection, abdominal pain, diarrhea, diabetes, as well as snake bite. It is also an antibacterial agent. This research is performed to prove garlic has an antibacterial effect towards Corynebacterium diphtheriae , which is often the cause of diphtheria, an infection that occur in respiratory tract. This experiment was conducted at Laboratorium of microbiology, Faculty of medicine, Brawijaya University. Method used in this research was well’s diffusion with the different extract concentration of 0% , 50%, 60% 70%, 80% , 90% and 100%. The data obtained from Kruskal wallis informs that the probabilty is < 0.05, therefore it can be stated that there is a significant different in the effect of garlic extract on the growth inhibition of Corynebacterium diphtheriae. The spearman correlation test shows a coefficient of 0.870, indicating there is a strong relationship between two variables. This research proves that garlic (Allium sativum) extract has an antibaterial effect towards the growth of Corynebacerium diphtheriae in vitro.
