Abstract
Amerika Serikat memiliki sistem pertahanan nuklir dalam membendung kekuatan negara yang mengancam negara dari serangan misil balistik berhulu ledak nuklir yang dinamakan National Missile Defense (NMD) dengan segala kemampuan teknologi mutakhir nya. Dengan adanya situasi di Semenanjung Korea yang memiliki intensitas konflik yang cukup tinggi pada saat ini, Amerika Serikat yang telah menjadi aliansi Korea Selatan ikut menjadi aktor dalam konflik tersebut. Amerika Serikat menempatkan Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) di Korea Selatan sebagai respon dari ancaman yang datang dari Korea Utara. Di lain sisi, melalui penempatan THAAD, penulis melihat terdapat strategi yang dapat digunakan Amerika Serikat untuk meningkatkan deterensi nya kepada China. Penempatan THAAD dipandang dapat meningkatkan credibility Amerika Serikat melalui communication dan diplomacy yang dilakukan Amerika Serikat jika dilihat dari pandangan teoritis dalam literatur ini. Hal tersebut dijelakan melalui variabel dan indikator yang terdapat dalam effective deterrence theory. Adapun metode dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif dengan jenis penelitian kualitatif.
English Abstract
The United States has a nuclear/missile defense system in stemming state powers that threaten the country from a nuclear explosion ballistic missile attack called National Missile Defense (NMD) with all its cutting edge technological capabilities. Given the situation on the Korean Peninsula that has a high intensity of conflict at the moment, the United States that has become a South Korean alliance has become an actor in the conflict. The United States placed the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in South Korea in response to threats coming from North Korea. In the other hand, through THAAD placement, the authors see there are strategies that the United States can use to increase its deterrence to China. The placement of THAAD is seen as increasing the credibility of the United States through communication and diplomacy by the United States when viewed from the theoretical view in this literature. This is evident through the variables and indicators contained in the effective deterrence theory. The method in this research is descriptive with the type of qualitative research.
