Tillah, Dewi Mar’a Konita (2017) Humans’ Domination toward Animals Depicted in “Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them” Original Screenplay Written by J.K. Rowling. Sarjana thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.

Abstract

Where to Find Them” naskah film asli karya J.K. Rowling.

English Abstract

Humans’ domination has not only negative sense, but also positif one. For example is humans’ domination toward animals. It can be seen in some different forms, those are animals abuse and the creation of animals rights. Those kind of domination toward animals is also brought in a literary work, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” screenplay by J.K. Rowling. This study employs Postcolonial Ecocriticism theory to find out humans’ domination depicted in the screenplay. Qualitative descriptive method is used in relation to the use of systematic and explicit analysis. The data are taken from quotes of the screenplay and secondary sources that are related to the object of the study. This study reveals that Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them contains a dualistic thinking between humans in the magical world, that created the dichotomy of “being” and “beast”. Beings in the magical community in America restrict the interaction among the magical community and non-magical community, including the regulation of beasts to avoid conflict and protect magical world. The existence of “beasts” is considered as the cause of the problem for the magical community in getting worse. The refusal of non-magical community to magical community in America is the impact of European conquest. Newt Scamander’s presence in America can be seen as the remodeling of European colonization. In this case, Newt changes the perspective of magical community on beasts through knowledge and kindness.
