Abstract
Untuk dapat menguasai semua keahlian dalam berbahasa Inggris, siswa harus mengetahui sejumlah kosakata karena hal tersebut merupakan kompetensi dasar dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Akan tetapi, siswa biasanya menghadapi beberapa masalah saat mereka mempelajai kosakata. Salah satu masalah terbesar dalam pembelajaran kosakata adalah kebosanan siswa saat mereka harus menghafal katakata. Oleh karena itu, guru harus menyediakan media pembelajaran yang menarik saat kegiatan belajar mengajar berlangsung agar mempermudah siswa untuk mempelajari kosakata. Berdasarkan pengamatan peneliti saat peneliti melakukan magang dan menjadi guru pengganti kelas di 8A SMP Ahmad Yani Batu, sebagian besar siswa kurang menguasai kosakata bahasa Inggis. Untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut, peneliti mengajukan sebuah strategi pengajaran dengan menggunakan flashcards sebagai media pembelajaran dalam pengajaran kosakata. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menerapkan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas sebagai desain penelitian. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam satu siklus yang terdiri dari empat pertemuan. Ada empat tahap yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, dan refleksi. Peneliti menggunakan lima instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data, yaitu tes kosakata, daftar observasi pengajaran, daftar periksa partisipasi siswa, kuesioner siswa dan catatan lapangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan flashcards dalam pengajaran kosakata berhasil meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa. Berdasarkan hasil tes kosakata, nilai semua siswa pada post test meningkat dari nilai mereka pada pre-test. Itu berarti kriteria keberhasilan telah tercapai karena peneliti menentukan bahwa tindakan tersebut akan dianggap berhasil jika 100% nilai siswa dalam post test meningkat minimal 1 poin dari nilai mereka pada pre-test. Oleh karena itu, peneliti menyarankan agar guru bahasa Inggris menerapkan flashcards sebagai media pembelajaran untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa.
English Abstract
In order to get competency in all the English skill, students must know certain amount of vocabularies because it is the basic competence in learning English. However, students usually face several problems when they learn vocabulary. One of the biggest problems with vocabulary learning is the boredom when students require to memorizing the words. Therefore, teacher should provide an interesting medium in teaching and learning process in order to facilitate the students to learn vocabulary easily. Based on researcher’s personal observation when the researcher conducted internship and as the substitute teacher in A class grade 8 of SMP Ahmad Yani Batu, most of the students were lack of vocabulary. In order to overcome these problems, the researcher proposed a teaching strategy by using flashcards as the instructional media in teaching vocabulary. In this research, the researcher applied Classroom Action Research as the research design. The research was conducted in one cycle which consists of four meetings. There are four stages in this research, those are planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The researcher used five instruments in collecting the data, those are vocabulary test, teaching observation checklist, students’ participation checklist, students’ questionnaire and field notes. The result of this research showed that the implementation of flashcards in teaching vocabulary successfully improve students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on the result of the vocabulary test, all students’ score in post test was increased from their score in pre-test. It means that the criterion of success has reached because the researcher determined that the action will be considered as successful if 100% of the students’ score in the post-test gain at least 1 point improvement from their score on the pre-test. Therefore, the researcher suggests the English teacher to implement flashcards as the instructional media to improve students’ vocabulary mastery.
