Abstract
Modernisasi adalah sebuah proses terjadinya perubahan dalam kehidupan sosial. Proses modernisasi mencakup pola pikir dan aktifitas manusia. Penulis melakukan penelitian tentang modernisasi yang tercermin dalam film WALL-E (2008) yang distutradarai oleh Andrew Stanton. Terdapat dua rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini; (1) bagaimana modernisasi dicerminkan dalam film WALLE; (2) dampak apa yang disebabkan oleh modernisasi dalam film WALL-E. Penelitian ini dilakaukan menggunakan teori semiotic dari Saussure. Semiotik adalah sebuah ilmu yang mempelajari tanda berupa kata, gambar, suara, gestur, dan objek. Menurut Saussure, sebuah tanda dapat diinterpretasikan melalui konsep dyadic. Konsep ini terbagi menjadi penanda (signifier) dan arti dari tanda itu sendiri (signified). Konsep ini diterapkan dalam menganalisis tanda-tanda modernisasi yang ditemukan melalui pengamatan setting, figure behavior dan dialog dalam film. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa film WALL-E menceritakan tentang modernisasi. Axiom merupakan tanda utama dari modernisasi dalam film ini. Hal ini dapat terlihat dari fasilitas yang ada di Axiom. Penulis menemukan tiga tanda pendukung Axiom sebagai tanda utama dalam film WALL-E. Tanda pendukung tersebut tercermin dalam beberapa fasilitas seperti, pelayanan pijat, arena olahraga, dan sekolah. Fasilitas tersebut mempunyai karakter yang sama dengan Axiom karena itu semua merupakan produk teknologi modern. Modernisasi memiliki dampak positive dan negatif. Penulis menemukan tiga dampak positif modernisasi diantaranya, keefektipan dalam mobilisasi dan komunikasi, keefektipan dalam mempercantik diri, keefektipan dalam memberi perintah. Kemudian, ada empat dampak negatif modernisasi; kehilangan tempat asal, mengurangi komunikasi langsung, membuat hidup tidak mandiri dan kelebihan berat badan.
English Abstract
Modernization is a process of the occurrence change in social life. The modernization processes involves humans thought and their activity. The writer conducted a research about modernization that reflects in WALL-E movie (2008) directed by Andrew Stanton. There are two problems of the study in this research: (1) how modernization is reflected in WALL-E movie; (2) what are the impact of modernization in WALL-E movie. This research used semiotics by Saussure. Semiotics is a study of sign, it can take form of word, images, sounds, gestures and object. According to Saussure, a sign can be interpreted through dyadic model of sign. Consists of signifier and signified. The dyadic is applied in analyzing modernization’s sign that is found through the setting, figure behavior, and dialogue in the movie. The results of this research show that WALL-E movie tells about modernization. Axiom is the main sign of modernization in this movie. It can be seen through the facilitation in Axiom. By analyzing the facilitation, the writer found three supporting sign that can determine Axiom as the main sign in this research and it is reflected in some facilities, massage treatment, sport arena and school education. Those facilities have same characterization with Axiom because they are products of modern technology. From the modernization of technology, the writer found the positive and negative impacts of modernization. There are three positive impacts of modernization of technology; effectiveness on mobilization and communication, effectiveness on beauty, and effectiveness on fulfilling demand. Then, there are four negative impacts of modernization of technology in this research; losing the real place, reducing the direct communication, creating dependent life, and obesity.
