Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencaari tahu apakah ada korelasi yang signifikan antara kemampuan tata bahasa dan kemampuan menulis pada siswa tahun kedua di SMP Negeri 4 Batu. Di dalam peneltian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode kuantitatif dan desain korelasi. Subyek dari penelitia ini adalah 30 siswa yang diambil dari kelas 8-E. Seperti yang sudah di informasikan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris, siswa kelas 8-E memiliki pencapaian bahasa Inggris terbaik daripada kelas yang lain. Maka dari itu, peneliti menggunakan kelas ini sebagai sampel dari penelitian ini. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan dua instrument, tes tata bahasa da tes menulis. Fokus dari tes tata bahasa adalah melengkapi subject verb agreement pada simple present tense, simple present continuous, and simple past tense sebagai materi yang diajarkan pada semester tersebut. Untuk tes menulis, terfokus pada membentuk kalimat yang meliputi tenses pada topik tertentu. Untuk menilai tes tata bahasa, peniliti menggunakan kunci jawaban, dan untuk menilai tes menulis, peneliti menggnakan rubrik penillaian dari Brown (2007). Kedua instrumen tersebut sudah di validasi oleh guru Bahasa Inggris SMP Negeri 4 Batu. untuk mencari tahu adanya korelasi, peneliti menggunakan Pearson Produk Momen. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai ro adalah 0.927 dan nilai rtable pada tingkat signifikan 1% adalah 0.478. Artinya adalah ro lebih tinggi daripada rtable (ro > rtable). Kemudian, ditemukan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara kemampuan tata bahasa dan kemampuan menulis. Lebih jauh lagi, dapat dianggap bahwa hipotesis alternatif (Ha) dapat diterima dan hipotesis null (Ho) ditolak. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara kemampuan tata bahasa dan kemampuan menulis dengan nilai signifikan yang sangat tinggi.
English Abstract
The purpose of the study is to find out if there is significant correlation between grammar competence and writing competence of the second year students at SMP Negeri 4 Batu. In this study, the researcher used quantitative method and correlational design. The subject of this study was 30 students taken from 8-E class. As informed by the English teacher, the students of 8-E have the best achievement in English among the other classes. Therefore, the researcher considered to take this class as the sample of the research. To collect the data, the researcher used two instruments which were grammar test and writing test. The focus of the grammar test was completion of subject verb agreement on simple present tense, simple present continuous, and simple past tense as the material given on that semester. For the writing test, the focus was in construction sentences covering tenses under particular topic. To score the grammar test, the researcher used answer key, and to score the writing test, the raters used scoring rubric from Brown (2007). The instruments had been validated by the English Teacher of SMP Negeri 4 Batu. To find out the correlation, the researcher used Pearson Product Moment. The finding of the research shows that the value of ro is 0.927 and the value of rtable in the degree of significance 1% is 0.478. It means that ro is higher than rtable (ro > rtable). Therefore, there is significant correlation between grammar competence and writing competence. Furthermore, it is considered that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In conclusion, there is significant correlation between grammar competence and writing competence and the value of the significance is very high.
