Abstract

Materi adalah komponen utama dari buku teks Bahasa Inggris. Sejak Bahasa Inggris dipelajari oleh seluruh orang di dunia, kebudayaan harus disertakan dalam materi buku teks. Hal ini akan membantu siswa untuk lebih peduli terhadap perbedaan budaya agar lebih memahami perihal budaya. Sehingga, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui materi kebudayaan apa saja yang ada di buku teks dan mana yang mendominasi materi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analysis konten. Metode ini sangat sesuai karena dan adanya penjelasan pada setiap hasil yang diperoleh. Checklist yang dipakai telah diadaptasi dari Tüm dan Uĝuz (2014) dan dikembangkan dengan menggunakan kriteria dari Cortazzi dan Jin (1999). Sumber data dari penelitian ini adalah buku teks ‘Bahasa Inggris’ untuk siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas tahun pertama yang diterbitkan oleh Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesai dalam rangka penerapan kurikulum 2013. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada sembilan bab dalam buku teks, dan tidak semuanya mengandung materi kebudayaan. Terdapat empat materi kebudayaan asal (C1), dua materi kebudayaan tujuan (C2) dan nol materi kebudayaan internasional (C3), dan hal ini menunjukkan bahwa C1-lah yang mendominasi konten dari materi kebudayaan dalam buku teks. Hasil yang telah diperoleh sesuai dengan pernyaatan McKay (2012), yang menyatakan bahwa C1 harus mendominasi buku teks. Disisi lain, hasil yang diperoleh sesuai dengan pernyataan dari Kachru (1992), yang menyatakan bahwa C1 dan C2 lebih dominan daripada C3 di dalam buku teks. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, peneliti menyarankan kepada pembaca agar bisa memilih buku teks Bahasa Inggris yang memiliki beragam materi kebudayaan. Untuk para guru, agar mengajarkan materi kebudayaan yang ada pada buku ‘Bahasa Inggris’ dan membantu siswa untuk tahu banyak tentang budaya di seluruh dunia. Pun, untuk peneliti selanjutnya, disarankan untuk menggunakana instrument lain dalam pengumpulan data.

English Abstract

Materials are the main component of English textbook. Since English is learnt by many people around the world, culture should be included in the materials of textbook to help learners become more aware of different cultures to promote cultural understanding. Thus, the purpose of this research is to know what types of culture materials are in ‘Bahasa Inggris’ textbook and which one dominates the materials. This research uses content analysis method, and there is explanation on all of the results that has been found. In order to do so, a checklist adapted from Tüm and Uĝuz (2014) which was developed based on criteria of types of culture materials from Cortazzi and Jin (1999) was employed. ‘Bahasa Inggris’ textbook for the first year students of Senior High School as a source published by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. This textbook is used by all Senior High School in Indonesia as the implementation of curriculum 2013. The finding showed that there were nine chapters of the textbook. Not all of them contained culture materials. There were four materials from source culture (C1), two materials from target culture (C2) and zero materials from international culture (C3) which means the C1 dominates the content of culture materials in textbook. This result met the statement of McKay (2012) who stated that C1 should dominate the materials. The result also met the statement of Kachru (1992) who stated that C1 and C2 materials are more dominant than C3. Based on the findings, the researcher suggested that the readers can select book with more variative culture materials, for the teacher can tell the students about the culture materials in ‘Bahasa Inggris’ textbook and help students have much knowledge about culture. For further researchers, it is suggested to use other instruments to gather the data.
