English Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of Muntingia calabura leaf ethanol and methanol extracts against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Materials used in this research were Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Muntingia calabura leaf ethanol extract, Muntingia calabura leaf methanol extract. The method used in this research was experiment with a completely randomized design (CRD) with 6 treatments. The treatments was consisted of extraction with ethanol solvent 50%, extraction with ethanol solvent 75%, extraction with ethanol solvent 96%, extraction with methanol solvent 50%, extraction with methanol solvent 75%, and extraction with methanol solvent 96%. The variable of this reseach was inhibition zone diameter of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Data of this research were analyzed by descriptive. The results showed that the Muntingia calabura leaf ethanol and methanol extract with concentration: 50%, 75%, and 96% have an influence on the growth inhibitory of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The best treatment of this research was Muntingia calabura leaf methanol 96% extract with inhibition zone: 2.1 cm of Escherichia coli and 1.7 cm of Staphylococcus aureus. It can concluded that Muntingia calabura leaf methanol extract was higher bioactive components than Muntingia calabura leaf ethanol extract. The suggestion from this research was tested about specific and non specific characterictic of Muntingia calabura leaf ethanol and methanol extract.
