Abstract

Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng, sebagai salah satu pondok pesantren tertua di Indonesia, yang telah berdiri sejak tahun 1899 mengalami berbagai perubahan-perubahan identitas melalui modernisasi dalam bidang pendidikan. Modernisasi tersebut sudah dicita-citakan oleh pendirinya, K.H. Hasyim Asy’ari sejak pertama kali mendirikan Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng, meskipun pembaruan tersebut baru dimulai oleh keponakannya, Kiai Ilyas, dan benar-benar terealisasi pada kepemimpinan anaknya, Wahid Hasyim. Suasana pemikiran masyarakat yang sebagian terkonstruksi oleh Barat, mendudukkan pesantren menjadi pendidikan kelas dua, dan di sisi yang lain, sebagian masyarakat justru beranggapan segala hal yang dibawa oleh Barat, termasuk sistem pendidikannya adalah haram untuk dipelajari. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis berfokus pada representasi identitas Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng pada modernisasi yang dilakukannya tersebut yang dilihat melalui perspektif poskolonial, dikarenakan identitas merupakan kajian dalam lingkup budaya, dan budaya tidak akan terjadi tanpa adanya interaksi, dan interaksi juga tidak akan terjadi tanpa adanya bentuk komunikasi. Adapun hasil akhir yang didapat dalam penelitian ini adalah bahwa representasi identitas Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng pada modernisasi yang dilakukan adalah bentuk pengangkatan identitas pesantren dan masyarakat pribumi, serta penjagaan dan pengembangan cita-cita pendirinya.

English Abstract

Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng, as one of pesantren in Indonesia, which has been established since 1899 experienced various changes of identity through modernization in the field of education. This modernization has been aspired by its founder, K.H. Hasyim Asy'ari since the foundation of Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, although the modernization just started by his nephew, Kiai Ilyas, and really realized in the leadership of his son, Wahid Hasyim. The societal atmosphere, partly constructed by the West, puts the pesantren into second-class education, and on the other hand, some societies really think of everything that was identical with the West, including its education system forbidden to learn. In this study, the author is focused on the representation of the identity of Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng on the modernization has been done seen through postcolonial perspectives, because of identity is the part of cultural studies, and culture will not occur without interaction, and interaction will not occur without any form of communication. The final result of this research is that representation of identity of Pondok Pesantren Tebuireng on modernization which is done is a form of identity appointment of pesantren and society, and also guarding and developing the ideals of its founder.
