Translation is the way to transfer the messages from the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). In translating an utterance, a translator may find difficulties in finding the best equivalent. To solve those difficulties, a translator may use certain translation procedures. One of the translation procedures may used by the translator is translation shifts or transposition. This study is carried out to reveal the translation shifts applied by the translator of Indonesian subtitle of the movie entitled “Big Hero 6”. This study was a qualitative one, which was conducted through descriptive method. Research design was document analysis since it focused on analyzing the subtitle of “Big Hero 6” movie. In the analysis, the data were analyzed based on the theory from Machali (2000). The results of the study revealed that the shifts applied by the translator involved: transposition 1, transposition 2, transposition 3 and transposition 4. Among all of the translation shifts proposed by Machali, all the types of shifts were applied by the translator of “Big Hero 6” movie. Transposition 1 is the most occurred shifts. Then, it is followed by transposition 4 and transposition 3 as the second and third most occurred shifts. Certain reasons has become the translator consideration of doing shifts. The first reason was because the structural differences, which are done to achieve the equivalent of the sentence structure of the target language. For example, singular and plural terms, adjective phrase construction, etc. The second reason was translator preferences, which are done to obtain an accepted, meaningful, and natural translation results. This study focuses on analyzing the type of translation shifts applied by the translator of Big Hero 6 movie and the possible reason of the translator to do shifts, which made this study not deep enough in data analysis. Therefore, the next researchers are expected to broaden the data analysis by analyzing the appropriateness of the translation. Furthermore, the topic of this study is quite extensive, which later is able to cause various range of discussion. It is suggested for the future researchers to specify the topic to obtain more specific discussion. The topic discussed can be focused into complex or complex-compound sentences, noun and noun phrases, etc.
