Abstract

Laki-laki dan perempuan diharapkan untuk melakukan strategi yang berbeda dalam menyampaikan keinginan mereka, seperti dalam kalimat permintaan. Laki-laki diharapkan untuk berbicara secara direct and perempuan lebih indirect. Tetapi, strategi yang digunakan laki-laki dan peremuan dapat berubah dikarenakan oleh perbedaan generasi dan lingkungan yang berubah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan strategi permintaan dan memeriksa directness level yang digunakan oleh pelanggan laki-laki dan perempuan dalam membuat permintaan di Divisi Bahasa Laboratorium Ilmu Humaniora. Pendekatan kualitatif digunakan untuk melaksanakan penelitian ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan data dari ucapan para pelanggan di Language Service and Development Center Universitas Brawijaya Malang. Penemuan ini dianalisa menggunakan teori dari Blum-Kulka (1987) mengenai strategi permintaan dan directness level. Hasil dari penelitian, pelanggan laki-laki menggunakan 6 dari 9 strategi, yaitu Mood Derivable (5), Performative (16), Hedge Performative (1), Want Statement (4), Suggestory Formulae (1), dan Query Preparatory (5). Pelanggan perempuan menggunakan 7 dari 9 strategi, yaitu Mood Derivable (6), Performative (16), Hedge Performative (3), Obligation Statement (2), Want Statement (21), Query Preparatory (20), and Strong Hints (2). Pada directness level, laki-laki menggunakan Direct (25) and Conventionally Indirect (7). Sedangkan yang perempuan menggunakan Direct (45), Conventionally Indirect (23), and Non-Conventionally Indirect (2). Berdasarkan analisa dan diskusi, pelanggan laki-laki dan perempuan menggunakan beberapa strategi yang berbeda dalam membuat permintaan. Kebanyakan, laki-laki menggunakan Performative dan perempuan menggunakan Want Statement. Tetapi dalam directness level, mereka kebanyakan menggunakan direct dalam membuat permintaan. Walaupun perempuan seharusnya lebih indirect dan laki-laki direct. Penelitian ini masih dapat berkembang dengan menganalisa obyek yang berbeda, seperti dengan tingkat edukasi, umur, dan pekerjaan. Diharapkan, penelitian kedepan dapat menemukan hasil yang berbeda dan menarik.

English Abstract

Male and female were expected to perform different strategies to convey their intention, such as in request. Male was expected to be direct and female more indirect. However, the strategies that male and female used could change, because of different generation and the change of society. This study aimed to find out the request strategies and investigate the directness level of male and female customers perform in making request at Language Service and Development Center. Qualitative approach used in conducting this study. The data were the utterances of the customers in Language Service and Development Center at Universitas Brawijaya Malang. The finding was analyzed by using theory from Blum-Kulka (1987) about the request strategies and directness level. The result of this study, male customers were performing 6 out of 9 strategies. Those were Mood Derivable (5), Performative (16), Hedge Performative (1), Want Statement (4), Suggestory Formulae (1), and Query Preparatory (5). Female customers were performing 7 out of 9 strategies. Those were Mood Derivable (6), Performative (16), Hedge Performative (3), Obligation Statement (2), Want Statement (21), Query Preparatory (20), and Strong Hints (2). The directness levels performed by male customers were Direct (25) and Conventionally Indirect (7). However, female customers used Direct (45), Conventionally Indirect (23), and Non-Conventionally Indirect (2). Based on the analysis and discussion, male and female customers used some different strategies in performing request. Mostly, male used Performative and female used Want Statement. Male and female customers mostly used direct in performing request. Eventhough female should be more indirect and male direct. The study could still be developed by analyzing different object such as with different education level, age, and occupation. Hopefully, the future research would find different and interesting result.
