Abstract
English Abstract
Background : Studies show the cytotoxic effect of black cumin seed extract and oil can reduce the viability of lung cancer cells including VEGF and increase the Hb of cancer patients. This study aims to compare Hb and VEGF levels between lung cancer patients who were given chemotherapy and black cumin and those undergoing standard chemotherapy. Method : This study employed a quantitative approach using the pre-post test control group design method involving 21 lung cancer patients at dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital, East Java, who were observed for 9 weeks between June and October 2023. The control group includes patients undergoing standard chemotherapy and the treatment group includes those undergoing chemotherapy with the addition of black cumin. Hb and VEGF levels were examined using ELISA. Result : There were significant pre and post differences after the 9-week study in Hb and VEGF levels between the control and treatment groups with p-value = 0.021 and p-value = 0.007. However, there was no significant difference between delta Hb and VEGF pre and post treatment in the control and treatment groups with p-value = 0.224 and p-value = 0.754. Conclusion : The addition of black cumin for 9 weeks was able to prevent a decrease in Hb levels and reduce VEGF levels in lung cancer patients with standard chemotherapy.
