Magister thesis, Universitas Brawijaya.
Abstract
This study investigates the influence of entrepreneurial personality traits on the entrepreneurial activities of agribusiness small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sumberejo Village, Batu City, East Java. Recognizing SMEs as critical contributors to Indonesia’s economic development, the research emphasizes the interplay between personality traits and entrepreneurial success. Drawing upon the Big Five Personality theory, this study focuses on key traits, including risk-taking propensity, innovativeness, need for achievement, need for independence, and proactiveness, exploring how they shape entrepreneurial activities such as skill improvement, business management, development, market expansion, and revenue growth. The research employs a qualitative explanatory design, utilizing semistructured interviews, non-participant observation, and comprehensive documentation for data collection. Twelve informants from two SMEs— Nawangsari and Srikandi Factory—served as the research subjects. These SMEs represent a vital component of the agribusiness landscape, offering unique insights into rural entrepreneurship. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model, ensuring depth and rigor through systematic coding and thematic analysis. Methodological robustness was achieved through the application of triangulation techniques to meet the criteria of credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Findings demonstrate that entrepreneurial personality plays a pivotal role in determining the success of entrepreneurial activities. Proactiveness and innovativeness emerged as particularly influential traits, driving market reach, product diversification, and overall business growth. Informants with higher levels of risk-taking and achievement orientation exhibited better adaptability to market challenges and opportunities. The study underscores the necessity of integrating personality-based approaches in entrepreneurial training and development programs to bolster the performance of agribusiness SMEs. This research contributes to the academic discourse on entrepreneurship by bridging the gap between personality studies and practical entrepreneurial outcomes, particularly within rural and agribusiness contexts. Practical implications include recommendations for stakeholders, including policymakers, educational institutions, and SME actors, to design targeted interventions that foster entrepreneurial traits. Such efforts are essential for sustaining rural economic development and enhancing the contribution of SMEs to Indonesia’s broader economic goals.
