Abstract
Penelitian ini membahas terkait konstruksi atau proses-proses yang membentuk citra diri kaum gay di Kota Malang. Dilatarbelakangi oleh jumlah populasi gay yang terus meningkat di tengah-tengah kehidupan masyarakat Kota Malang yang masih belum menerima keberadaan kaum homoseksual secara normatif. Terdapat sebagian kelompok masyarakat yang bersikap inklusif terhadap kelompok minoritas tersebut, tetapi ada juga sebagian kelompok masyarakat yang masih menolak atau menunjukkan sikap homophobia. Oleh karena itu, masing-masing dari individu gay memiliki cara-cara tersendiri dalam membentuk citra dirinya di masyarakat umum. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Peneliti menggunakan teori konstruksi sosial dari Peter L. Berger sebagai pisau analisisnya. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat dua bentuk citra diri yang dimiliki oleh kaum gay yang ada di Kota Malang, yaitu citra diri terbuka dan citra diri tertutup. Faktor yang melatarbelakangi citra diri terbuka adalah faktor kenyamanan, sedangkan faktor yang melatarbelakangi citra diri tertutup adalah faktor keluarga, faktor stigma sosial, dan faktor agama. Selain itu, terdapat dampak yang dirasakan bagi gay yang terbuka dan gay yang tertutup. Kaum gay yang memiliki citra diri terbuka cenderung merasakan dampak sosial, sedangkan gay yang memiliki citra diri tertutup cenderung merasakan dampak psikologis.
English Abstract
This research discusses about the construction or processes that shape the selfimage of gay people in Malang City. It is motivated by the increasing number of gay population the midst of Malang City’s community life which still does not accept the existence of homosexuals normatively. There are some groups of people who are inclusive of these minority groups, but there are also some groups of people who still reject or show homophobic attitudes. Therefore, each gay individual has their own ways of shaping their self-image in the general public. The method used in this research is qualitative with a cas study approach. The researcher used Peter L Berger’s social construction theory as the analysis knife. The result of this study is that there are two forms of self-image owned by gay in Malang City, namely open self-image and closed self-image. The factor behind the open self-image is the comfort factor, while the factors behind closed self-image are family, social stigma, and religious factors. In addition, there is a perceived impact for open gays and closeted gays. Gays who have an open self-image tend to feel social impact, while gays who have a closed self-image tend to feel psychological impact.
