Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sikap dari mahasiswa Public Relation di Universitas Brawijaya terhadap bahasa Inggris. Dalam penelitian ini, mahasiswa dari program studi Public Relation belajar bahas Inggris dengan tujuan agar memiliki kesempatan yang lebih bagus dalam mencari pekerjaan. Maka dari itu, bahasa Inggris yang mereka pelajari adalah ESP (Bahasa Inggris untuk tujuan khusus) Peneliti menggunakan desain penelitian survey cross-sectional dan pendekatan quantitatif. Peneliti mengadaptasi angket dari AMTB untuk mengukur sikap mahasiswa terhadap bahasa Inggris. Ada 4 dimensi di dalam angket tersebut, yaitu sikap afektif, sikap kognitif, sikap konatif, dan sikap terhadap penutur asli bahasa Inggris. Populasi dalam penelitan ini adalah 73 mahasiswa yang berasal dari mahasiswa semester keempat ke atas. Peneliti hanya mengambil mahasiswa semester empat keatas karena ESP diajarkan pada semester ketiga dan kelima. Karena populasinya kurang dari 100 orang, maka seluruh populasi menjadi objek penelitian. Peneliti menerjemahkan angket tersebut dan melakukan uji coba kepada 20 mahasiswa Politeknik Negeri Malang. Lalu, untuk memvalidasi instrumen tersebut, peneliti berkonsultasi dengan ahli validasi dan menggunakan SPSS 21. Selain itu, untuk memastikan reliabilitas instrumen, peneliti menggunakan metode bernama koefisien Cronbach’s Alpha dalam software SPSS 21. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa Public Relation memiliki sikap positif terhadap bahasa Inggris. Hal ini didukung oleh hasil skor rata-rata dari sikap afektif, sikap kognitif, sikap konatif, dan sikap terhadap penutur asli bahasa Inggris. Skor rata-rata tertinggi diraih oleh sikap afektif (3.04), diikuti oleh sikap terhadap penutur asli bahasa Inggris (3.01), dan sikap kognitif (2.90). Skor rata-rata terendah diraih oleh sikap konatif (2.84). Berdasarkan hasil temuan, mahasiswa Public Relation merespon aktivitas belajar mengajar bahasa Inggris dengan positif.
English Abstract
This study aimed at exploring the attitudes of Public Relation students in Brawijaya University towards English. In this study, the students in Public Relation study program learn English as a preparation to face working situations. Therefore, the English they use is English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The researcher used cross-sectional survey as the research design and quantitative approach. She adapted AMTB questionnaire to measure the students’ attitude toward English. There are 4 dimensions in the questionnaire. Those are affective attitude, cognitive attitude, conative attitude, and attitude toward native English. The population of this research was 73 students of Public Relation study program who were in the 4th semester and above. The students were chosen because they had studied their English class in the 3rd and 5th semester. Since the population is less than 100, all population become the research participant. The researcher translated the questionnaire and did the try out to 20 students of Public relation study program in Politeknik Negeri Malang. Then, in order to validate the instruments, the researcher consulted to an expert validator and used SPSS 21. Moreover, to make sure the instrument was reliable, the researcher used method named coefficient Cronbach’s Alpha from SPSS 21 software. The result of the study showed that overall the students had positive attitude towards English. This is supported by the mean score of affective attitude, cognitive attitude, conative attitude, and attitude towards native English. The highest mean score was achieved by affective attitude (3.04), followed by attitude toward native English (3.01) and cognitive attitude (2.90). The lowest mean score was achieved by conative attitude (2.84). Based on the finding, the public relation students respond the English teaching learning activity in positive way.
