Abstract

Mengingat Hong Lou Meng dan terjemahannya akan terus memiliki nilai yang luar biasa di abad ke-21 dan bahwa bidang studi Redologi akan secara aktif meningkatkan pertukaran budaya Timur dan Barat, studi ini bertujuan untuk meneliti 1) tipe-tipe item budaya khusus (CSI) terkait kehidupan pribadi dalam novel Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansions) berdasarkan klasifikasi Newmark (2010); 2) strategi penerjemahan khusus yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan CSI terkait kehidupan pribadi; 3) apakah baik asingisasi maupun domestikasi diterapkan pada CSI terkait kehidupan pribadi dalam terjemahan bahasa Inggris novel Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansions); 4) faktor apa saja yang dapat memengaruhi strategi penerjemahan CSI terkait kehidupan pribadi dalam versi bahasa Inggris novel Hong Lou Meng (A Dream of Red Mansions). Klasifikasi Newmark (2010) ke dalam item budaya tertentu digunakan untuk pengumpulan data. Proses analisis data menggunakan model strategi penerjemahan oleh Aixela (1996) dan Vanuti (2001), serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi strategi penerjemahan oleh Lafevere (2017). Sumber data berasal dari novel Hong Lou Meng karya Cao Cueqin dan versi bahasa Inggrisnya, A Dream of Red Mansions, yang diterjemahkan oleh Yang Xianyi dan Glady Yang. Studi ini berfokus pada item-item budaya khusus yang terkait kehidupan pribadi dalam Hong Lou Meng dan terjemahannya, A Dream of Red Mansions. Ditemukan bahwa strategi penerjemahan naturalisasi (54,72%) adalah yang terbanyak digunakan dalam penerjemahan CSI yang terkait dengan kehidupan pribadi dalam versi bahasa Inggris Hong Lou Meng ke dalam A Dream of Red Mansions. Keterangan ekstra-tekstual, keterangan intra-tekstual dan strategi penciptaan otonom tidak ditemukan dalam versi terjemahan Hong Lou Meng dari A Dream of Red Mansions. Selanjutnya, temuan kami juga menafsirkan bahwa domestikasi adalah strategi utama Yang Xianyi dan Glady Yang dalam menerjemahkan budaya terkait kehidupan pribadi dengan menentukan item-item dalam versi bahasa Inggris Hong Lou Meng dari A Dream of Red Mansions. Khususnya, tiga faktor yang memengaruhi strategi penerjemahan: puitika, ideologi, dan patronase. Dengan adanya temuan tersebut diharapkan penelitian ini akan berfungsi sebagai panduan teoritis dan praktis untuk penerjemahan dan penyebaran karya sastra Cina di seluruh dunia di masa mendatang. Studi ini mengekplorasi prinsip-prinsip domestikasi dan asingisasi item-item budaya khusus (CSI) dalam penerjemahan bahasa Inggris-Mandarin yang mengungkap kecenderungan dan keputusan utama penerjemah. Namun, kompleksitas dan keragaman bidang penerjemahan memerlukan penelitian lebih lanjut. Penelitian di masa mendatang harus berfokus pada penelitian lintas bahasa komparatif, membanding perilaku penerjemahan dalam berbagai pasangan bahasa dan memperluas area penelitian pada jenis teks, seperti dokumen teknis, iklan, dan laporan berita untuk lebih memahami pemilihan strategi domestikasi dan asingisasi di berbagai bidang.

English Abstract

Considering the Hong Lou Meng and its translations will continue to be of great value in the 21st century and that the area of Redology studies will actively promote cultural interchange between the East and the West, this study aims to investigate 1) the types of personal life-related CSIs in Hong Lou Meng novel A Dream of Red Mansions based on the classification of Newmark (2010); 2) the specific translation strategies employed in rendering personal life-related CSIs; 3) whether either foreignisation or domestication is applied to the personal life-related CSIs in the English translations of Hong Lou Meng novel A Dream of Red Mansions. 4) what factors could influence the translation strategies of personal life-related CSIs in the English version of Hong Lou Meng novel A Dream of Red Mansions. The classification of Newmark (2010) to culture-specific items is employed for data collection. The data are analysed using the translation strategies model by Aixela (1996) and Vanuti (2001), as well as the factors influencing the translation strategies by Lefevere (2017). The data recourses are the Hong Lou Meng novel by Cao Cueqin and its English version, A Dream of Red Mansions, translated by Yang Xianyi and Glady Yang. This study focused on personal life-related culture-specific items in Hong Lou Meng and its translation, A Dream of Red Mansions. It is found that the naturalisation translation strategy (54.72%) is the most used in the translation of personal life-related CSIs in the Hong Lou Meng English version into A Dream of Red Mansions. Extra-textual gloss, intra-textual gloss, and autonomous creation strategy are not found in the Hong Lou Meng translation version of A Dream of Red Mansions. Furthermore, our findings also interpreted that domestication is the main strategy Yang Xianyi and Glady Yang used in translating personal life-related culture, specifying items in the Hong Lou Meng English version of A Dream of Red Mansions. Notably, three factors influenced the translation strategies: poetics, ideology, and patronage. With the findings, it is anticipated that the research will serve as a theoretical and practical guide for the future translation and dissemination of Chinese literary works worldwide. This study explores the domestication and foreignisation principles of culture-specific items (CSIs) in Chinese English translation, revealing translators' primary tendencies and decisions. However, the translation field's complexity and diversity require further investigation. Future research should focus on comparative cross-linguistic research, comparing translation behaviours in various language pairs and expanding the area of research on text types, such as technical documents, commercials, and news reports, to better understand the selection of domestication and foreignisation strategies in different fields.
