Abstract

Fenomena karir mengajar menjadi menarik karena adanya berbagai persepsi yang tersebar luas di masyarakat. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui persepsi dan motivasi guru EFL pra-jabatan lintas gender dalam memilih mengajar sebagai karir seumur hidup mereka. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti melibatkan peserta dari guru EFL prajabatan program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris di salah satu universitas negeri di Jawa Timur. Dengan jumlah partisipan sebanyak 82 orang, peneliti juga mengundang 4 orang untuk melakukan sesi wawancara. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran dimana data kuantitatif diperoleh dari hasil kuesioner sedangkan data kualitatif diperoleh dari hasil wawancara. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis deskriptif untuk menganalisis data. Dari hasil kuisioner dan wawancara, peneliti menemukan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara persepsi guru EFL prajabatan perempuan dan laki-laki tentang karir mengajar. Keduanya mempunyai persepsi positif dan negatif terhadap profesi guru. Persepsi positif ditunjukkan dengan banyaknya mereka yang sepakat bahwa mengajar merupakan pekerjaan mulia dan juga memerlukan kemampuan pengetahuan yang tinggi. Sedangkan persepsi negatif ditunjukkan mengenai faktor gaji dan kesulitan. Selain itu, peneliti juga menemukan bahwa motivasi altruistik sebagai motivasi tertinggi yang dimiliki oleh guru EFL prajabatan perempuan dan laki-laki karena menganggap perlunya membentuk anak di masa depan, diikuti oleh motivasi ekstrinsik dan juga motivasi intrinsik. Jumlah partisipan yang terlibat dalam penelitian ini menjadi keterbatasan penelitian. Penelitian selanjutnya mungkin dapat melibatkan partisipan dengan metode survei untuk mendapatkan informasi yang lebih mendalam.

English Abstract

The phenomenon about teaching career was interesting due to the various perceptions widespread over society. Therefore, this research was conducted to investigate the perceptions and motivations of EFL pre-service teachers accross gender to choose teaching as their lifecareer. In this study, the researcher involved participants from EFL pre-service teachers of the English language education study program in one of public university in East Java. With a total number of 82 participants, the researcher also invited 4 participants to conduct the interview session. This research used a mixed method where quantitative data were obtained from the results of questionnaires while qualitative data were obtained from the interviews. This research used descriptive analysis to analize the data. From the results of questionnaires and interviews, the researcher found that there is no significant difference between female and male EFL PTts perceptions about teaching career. Both of them have a positive and negative perception regarding teachers profession. Positive perceptions are indicated by many of them agreed that teaching is a noble job and also requires high knowledge skills. Meanwhile, negative perceptions are shown regarding the salary and difficulty factors. Apart from that, the researcher also found that altruistic motivation as the highest motivation possessed by female and male EFL PSTs because they think the necessity of shaping children in the future, followed by extrinsic motivation and also intrinsic motivation. The number of participants which involved in the current research become the limitations of the study. Future studies might involve the participants with survey method to obtain a deep information.
